Any opinions on my trigger
« on: July 21, 2013, 04:50:31 PM »

hi,

Basically I was down the nets with my dad and my little brother( Kent U13) , I was batting with my dad using the side arm and after about 6 balls he came over to me and told me that my initial movement was back (my backfoot went back), so suggested either:

I take my guard (middle) as normal but lean forward on my front foot, with my front foot ready to drive/defend.
or....
I ask for leg (1) and middle (3), i start on leg and just as the bowler comes into his delivery stride to move across on to middle.

I chose the latter as i felt that The first option would leave the leg stump open and increase chances of LBW. however after a few weeks of this new trigger i dont feel that its helping me perform any better. To be honest i havent really played that well this season anyway due to as level exams where i have been stressed but its getting to me and my confidence has hit rock bottom where i just feel i am currently not up to the job of batting.

Do you think i should go back to my old trigger or just stick with the one i have got????

Thanks,

Jack

Mate, ditch the trigger completely. You'd be better standing still and just watching the ball. Unless you're facing some decent pace... 75mph+ then you don't really need one.

okay, my opinions on triggers have varied greatly. Up until recently, I had a back and across trigger, then before that I had a forward press trigger ala Jonathan Trott. With both of these I found I got stuck, and could move again after the trigger. However, having been told to ditch the trigger, and 'get ready to hit the ball' with some kind of movement. therefore, if you are intent on moving, have a small trigger, I.e. open your front toe slightly, or press your weight forward while standing still. I now swear by this trigger, it doesnt move your head and has the same effect as a trigger.

Personally I think you should ditch the trigger and your weight should be balanced through the centre of both your feet.

I did at first move too far across, so i corrected it by marking middle as well as leg so i knew how much to move across

I never look down I just keep watching the bowler so practice it hard before I did in a. Game long time ago now but something I do go bit far just watch it I scored my fair share of runs so if it works for you use it

My trigger was away to leg initially, but I put this down to a nervousness of the ball after a 15 year gap without playing. I've developed a small front and across trigger now, which helps me focus on getting forward, rather than getting stuck in my crease. Pitches are not particularly bouncy round here, so you rarely get a lifter, making it a pretty safe bet to get on the front foot.
