Hi guys.

Just wanted to get some ideas and advice on club start ups, fundraising, approaching and acquiring possible sponsors and endorsements and any issues anyone has experienced with establishing a new club. I understand its not a common occurrence but I want to help my new club any way I can and getting a little knowledge and any tips would be great.

My new club was established in 2013 and has been a dream for more than 20 years for the chairman. Finally he has managed to make his dream a reality. Web link - http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/brookwaltoncc/

Brook Walton CC have secured a place in the Pontefract and District Cricket League and will be starting in the 3rd tier. 2 tiers below the 1st division. The squad is made up of experienced PDCL 1st division and CYCL premier players as well as younger players from both sections. realistic and achievable goals have been set to win promotion in two successive campaigns and begin playing 1st tier cricket in the 2016 season. Plans have been completed by the local authorities in recent months to build an all new sports centre which will include 2 cricket pitches, 2 football pitches, a rugby pitch, bowling green, tennis courts and all new pavilion / social club. Brook Walton will be moving to the new centre upon its completion.

Well, there's a brief outline of the club and what plans are in place, I just need some advice re the subject title really. As a new club we now have to source EVERYTHING we need to make a game of cricket possible, excluding facilities which we are renting for the moment. Does anyone have relevant experience with raising funds for such things? We will be running events with other clubs in the area such as T10/T20 tournaments, race nights, charity events, the usual things really and have a solid connection with the local Super League outfit - Wakefield Wildcats who are looking to support us on any event where their presence may have benefit.

Individually as playing members we are sourcing personal sponsors to help raise funds for things like balls, umpires fees, tea ladies and league fees.

If anyone can offer help / advice on how to overcome the financial issues we face please let me know. Also if anyone is interested in the club and would be open to sponsorships / advertising on our website , around the ground or on leisure wear please message me and we can discuss the finer details.

Speak to your local ECB Development Officer, ensure you have a structure in place regarding player pathways.  It looks as though you don't have a junior section, so a tie in with a club with junior teams (they can be separate clubs) will aid your structure in the coming years.  To this end, school-club links are also essential for the sustainability of a club.

The ECB and Sport England will be able to talk about funding streams for your club.  Sponsorship is key, as NGB funding schemes tend to lean towards clubs with junior sections.  Just get letters and phone calls to local businesses, adopt a scatter gun approach and speak to players regarding bending their employer's ears re; sponsorship.  Also speak to the ECB Facility and Investment manager for your area.  All NGBs have strategic facility plans and you may be able to align with that, which could open up more opportunities.  All ECB info should be on their website and they have a club intra site that may also be of use.

Thanks. One of the lads is on with the ECB stuff I think. We do not have a junior section or another squad...yet but these are in the pipeline for the coming years

The usual really.

A couple of good quizes a year. We clear £500 profit each time via ticket sales, donations for the honesty bar, raffle / blackout etc. Plus other mixed social events. Wine tasting / curry evenings etc

Well stocked / run bar will clear a good profit if well managed.

T10 / T20's / 6's comepetions - probabley that later is best. 6 or 7 teams = 40 odd players for entry fees. Plus raffle. Good bar / donated barrels of beer sold for clear profit. Finish the competition then have a live band etc.

Sponsorship of kit, players, matches, stumps, fixture card. Always good fun to get Mum's, wife's, partners to be match ball sponsors - preferably a pair of balls. etc. 

Raffle a top of the range bat over the season, sell to players, opposition, families, work collegues  - we sold over £700 of tickets for a top of the range Forum branded bat in 2012. The winner didn't want the bat so we paid him £100 and then re-raffled it at the end of season players do when everyone had the cost of a raffle ticket added to the dinner price.

Get a group of the club's movers and shakers together and you would be surprised of the ideas that flow.

Yorkshire Post/Headingley went through a similar change a 5 years ago? Might be worth having a chat with Foxy. Foxy has sourced most of Headingley's sponsorship and knows how to maximise pitchero for that task. Main issue was going from £300 a year revenue as a friendly team with no real need to generate funds to becoming a league team and having to find £500-1000 a year for membership/balls/umpires/away teas etc . Requires a revision of subs/match fees (upwards :-( ) and getting events and sponsorship coming in. Playing league cricket does generate more interest. If you are after "big ticket" items like sightscreens/covers etc then don't be afraid to tell suppliers what your budget is and do a deal. Might also be worth doing a bit of ebay shopping for "collection only" items.

forgot to mention - sounds silly but you are a cricket team and play as much as possible. Too many Yorks teams just play Saturday league games. Get the season extended to Sunday/Midweek and either end of the league season with friendlies. Basically it raises more money the more you play.

Other thing you MUST do is use the payments system on Pitchero. Not only can you track and pay Subs online but pretty much anything can be added. We (ashorne) have a small 50 Club running by DD through the site and it's due to raise over £300 this year for the club. You can run it many ways but we do it as £5 per month (or more) goes into a draw and 50% of the proceeds are returned in cash with the other 50% back to the club. Using pitchero makes it stupidly easy to manage.

It depends....

If by creating a new team you collect 16 * £50 = £800 in subs before a ball is bowled then you are making money as long as the match fees combined with subs covering your costs. Even then it's still 16 more players (nobody can run a team on just 11 players in the real world) and this means more people at events, raffles even potential sponsorship contacts.

Many teams cut down from 3 teams to 2 because they are getting 9 players out in the 3s. The actual cost of doing that is you end up losing 13/14 players and being put in a similar position in your 2 XI the season after. If people don't think they can get in a team they either stop playing or move away, so it rarely helps the club in the longer team. Unless you are losing money hand over fist, it's a false economy.

not forgetting that indoor nets are not a "loss leader". Charge a fiver and make sure your costs are covered, maybe even a small profit. Anybody complains then ask them to tell you how much they were being charged 20 years ago (or get them to ask their dad) and adjust it for inflation.

As club treasurer I found  Sport England most  helpful and co- operative, in 2012 on completion of forms  and contractors quotes my club received a grant of £50,000, 20,000  for new perimeter fence including including installation costs.£ 18,000 for two portable fitted out changing rooms and £ 12,000 for ground maintenance equipment and to  upgrade the electricity supply. The whole process took around two months.
