suit you sir!
« on: October 02, 2013, 03:34:53 PM »

Charting the movements on the 'bat exchange' on here is an interesting process all to itself. I'm sure someone could log the passage of certain pieces of willow around the site and part of me wonders which is the most 'moved on' bat on here? That is only a passing thought though, I'm not quite into nerdvana yet.
But what does intrigue me is what exactly makes a bat that 'suits you sir'?
I haven't bought as many as some guys on here, but I do know that finding one that really did suit me was more problematic than I thought.
Now in my dotage I eventually saw sense and first went for what some would call 'a wand'.
Nice bat, weighed 2 lb 6 oz good piece of willow, picked up as you would expect at that weight, and I was actually able to hit the ball with it.
However, I did have a nagging feeling that I was having to put a bit too much of me into the shots, rather than letting the bat do the work. I've since moved the bat on and the guy who bought it absolutely loves it.
The next bat that I got was a serious investment even though I got it at a savage discount.
You can't go wrong with a Salix, and I got a Pod Performance from IJC (still have it) that looked a purler. Fully dressed at 2 lb 7 oz and big for that weight I was naturally expecting great things. It picks up well, pings nicely and should hit the ball a mile. But thus far I'm struggling to time my shots with it. I know the bat will be an absolute shotgun in some hands - why not mine? Very frustrating, but I'm going to give it a very, very thorough try before I let it go. But the bottom line is, it might just not suit me for one reason or another.
Now, it's all very well suggesting that a bad workman blames his tools, and in my case I'd certainly agree.
On a whim a bought a bat off this site at what purported to be 2 lb 9 oz (the popular weight) to see if it made any difference to my timing and getting more value for my shots.
When the bat arrived I was pleasantly surprised. It had been refurbed to as new standard. Picking it up it instantly felt 'right'. The pick up was superb and it felt perfectly balanced for me. I must admit I did eventually weigh it and it tipped the scales at 2 lb 8 oz without a scuff sheet. Very happy with that.
Interestingly (well I found it interesting) the bat has almost no bow and quite a flat face. When I used it for the first time in a net session, what started with all good intentions rapidly degenerated into see ball, attempt to hit cover off ball. There was no problem with timing, the ball screamed off the bat and it didn't seem to matter where on the blade I made contact (I'm not foolish enough to believe that I was middling everything).
Was it a flash in the pan? well next time out in very gloomy conditions, the same again. I pulled my horns in a bit, but when I did play a shot the ball stayed hit. I don't know if the flat face or lack of bow (or both) has made a difference, but, the bat definitely seems to suit me.
It really does make me wonder - how? Why?.
Anyway, when I bought the bat I suspected its origin, even though it was stickered up differently. The maker kindly confirmed his work when I asked him, and I sincerely hope that he won't mind me revealing that it was Paul Aldred.

So - what process do you guys go through to find a bat that really suits you? (Well, we've got to talk about something in the close season).

I think I know what you mean.

I've had a number of amazing performing bats since joining the forum but I can honestly say I haven't ever found my holy grail.

The closest I've ever come was with an old Warrior made for me by Richard Wensley. It didn't perform as well as a few of the other bats I've had since but it was no slouch either. It just felt RIGHT. Everything about seemed to be perfect in the hands and it really gave me a world of confidence when I used it. Unfortunately when the new faces took over I sent it in for a refurb and they shaved way too much off, changed the shape slightly for some unmentioned reason and it was never the same again :( it wasn't the best bat I've had, but it certainly partnered with me the best. I don't think ill get that close again now! I'll just have to keep using ridiculous guns and get over it by watching the ball disappear over the fence... Or into the hands of long on and deep mid wicket hahaha

Yes, it's an interesting one. I had a lovely Insignia that just worked. I broke it and an identical weight and shape, but slightly newer version just didn't work. It makes no sense to me.

Well reading this is making me think a bit. I have a 'modified' GM Purist and it just works for me. I can time the ball to the boundary rather that try and put everything into it to get it there. And as other have said, it just feels right (basically I think I love this bat)
A they don't make the original shape Purist any more, and I've changed mine a bit (not too drastically but enough) I was thinking about taking it to a bat maker and having an exact replica made. I am however thinking it may not be worthwhile after some of the comments on this thread.

The closest I've had to this before was a chase 150 finback I bought when I was 14, when the ball was hit it stayed hit. But there was always something there that didn't quite 'click' with that bat.

I have another strange problem.

I'm a bit of a Gray Nichols  fan boy, have been ever since my parents bought me my first bat aged 8 or so. Apart from a venture with a Woodworm which quickly disintegrated, I've always used GN.

I had a Xiphos 5 star and I would never hear a bad word said about it as it always seemed to me to be an absolute gun, though I never scored any big runs with it and whilst it pinged in the nets, out on the field I would struggle to score. Anyway, my beautiful Xiphos took one too many blows to the toe and disintegrated right up along the right hand scoop. As this season was starting in a couple weeks and I didn't have time to get down to a shop, I took a punt on the Oblivion Carbo I have in my bag now. 1200 runs and 4 tons later, I'm still struggling to like it. I have scored so many runs with it but I still am not entirely convinced by it despite all the runs against its name in the book.

My theory as to why I don't like it so much but have been far more successful with the Oblivion as opposed to the Xiphos is that the Xiphos had a HUGE middle, whereas the Oblivion has a relatively small middle. Again this would not make much sense until you look more closely at the bats. The Xiphos had a huge middle that was fairly high up the bat. The Oblivion's smaller middle is seemingly perfectly placed lower down the bat, a position where damp wickets can find more easily. The higher middle of the Xiphos suited the bouncier nets I frequented and the much meatier bat made it feel all the more sweet, but it just wasn't suited to my game.

I'm also wondering if the handle has something to do with the bat feeling right? Can o' worms this one!

It is all abit random. I think some do work, and copying it isn't going to make it not work.

I had a biggest kahuna. Weighed just under 3lb was a gunn no matter where I hit it, and then the edge fell off. Was gutted.

Bought a gray Nichols oblivion extreme pro which was 3lb. As I couldn't find another kahuna over 2.12

Gn was great but it was not the kahuna.

Decided to go custom. First was horrible and went back. 2nd was a gunn but didn't feel right,

I'd had oval handles fitted as my biggest kahuna had an oval handle.

Decided for a round handle on this custom made(b3) and it's now become the new holey grail!

RANDOM!!

100% correct I think

Ive only ever settled on one bat and the handle is very thick, no other bat comes close to it and all others just feel wrong.

Whilst I think a quality bat certainly makes a big difference, I think the bigger difference is mental.  A bat may be perfectly suited to someone and tick all the boxes, but if they don't think it does, it simply won't be "right".  It's such a confidence thing, batting!

I think I am fairly lucky reading this!!!   Basically as long as my bat has a low middle and thin handle I am a happy boy - my last few bats (H4L Hattori, GM Hero, BDM, CA Ltd Edition, Bulldog) have all been really good and had no complaints with performance at all.  The only time I was not happy was when I deviated from this formula and had a GN Ultimate which I could not get on with.

I think there is something in this. I compared the handle on the new bat
http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=17584.msg281742#msg281742

with the handle of the bat that I used to use back in the day
http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=20376.0

Different shape, but both are quite thick, especially in the bottom hand area and obviously I feel very comfortable with it. It might have been key in the 'this just feels right' moment.

It's all about the handle for me, I tend to use tape to get the right shape in the hands.
