Gray-Nicolls Extreme Bats

We have just had a few more bats in from a recent visit to the Grays factory and all of these are part of the heavyweight Extreme family.

They're all around the 3lbs 3oz to 3lbs 3oz mark apart from the Oblivion 5 star that has a little heart wood on the edge - that one is just under 3lbs 7oz.

Lots of talk about edges and spines..let's just say that with that much weight behind the bat, if you can pick it up and time it well, the ball will certainly travel some distance.

I think this is probably the heaviest bat we have had in stock. We once had a bat custom made for a customer that was 3lbs 6oz but with 6 grips!

Nice big chunky batsm but what grade of wood are. They made from and how's the ping?

I ask as I have an oblivion extreme pro(3.3)which is a monster, and an old powerbow extreme(3.2) which is an absolute plank.
Streaky at b3 said it was the worse piece of willow he'd ever seen!


Do I'm always warheads they seem pot luck.

3.2 is a pretty big plank, at that weight it must have been special lol!  :o

I think the last year models were Grade 4, I believe this years Powerbow Extremes are Players so Grade 1. I think the Oblivion was actually Grade 2 Last year and is G2 this year as well. Those oblivions look pretty nice. Last year's models were pretty huge, have one at 3.5 which had 46mm edges I think and a spine around 71-72mm.

Its a 5 Star so although it shouldn't be as good as your Oblivion Extreme Pro which is the grade above. It does however feel good when tested with a mallet and should open up well after some good knocking in sessions.

I'm using Tapatalk to upload the photos and seem to be losing all the clarity….need to work out a better way to do it.

The Powerbow Players are really nice…some great looking blades and the weights are good as well at around the 3.2 to 3.3 mark.

Where do the E41 Extremes sit on the old fashioned Grading scales, I think GN still call it a G2, is it actually more like a G3. The prices are actually alot cheaper as well, so it would make sense for the Oblivions from last year to be a higher grade.

Grays this year don't have any specifics as to what grade each bat is supposed to be. Based upon the number of price points in the range now, I guess you would be correct in saying it should be a Grade 3.

Awesome bats in awesome weights its just a shame its still such a gamble.

They should cater for us with heavy bats in different grades. And explain in English what it is!

I have been pretty lucky so far in that regard, all the bats I have bought from the UK in the last 2 -3 years were online and the off the shelf big branded ones (GN and Kook) have turned out to be pretty awesome.

I think GN is probably the only brand that really caters to heavy bat users - this year they have 3 lines I believe, the Powerbow, Oblivion and the Maverick (which I think is Grade 4 like last years Powerbow). The only other off the shelf maker I know that caters at over 3lb is Kook with the Ultra Menace, though they usually tend to be high 2's more than 3+.   

Otherwise you pretty much have to get one custom made.

I have a biggest kahuna at 3.2 and that was a real gem unfortunately its edge fell off!

Shame kook dropped it for the gimmicky and awful menace. Grrrr

I am not sure what to think of the menace - it is definitely gimmicky, but have one that weighs 3.1 and it is very good. For its price, have seen some with lovely grains on them, I think mine has something like 12 or so, almost straight with a little heartwood. It is actually a lovely looking bat from the front. The only thing is that toe is real thin, and I am always worried when it might snap. I thought using a bat over 3lb was supposed to make you stop worrying about such things.

Newbery used to make a B52 xl that was pretty heavy, not sure if they do anything that big anymore.

Newbery have the Tour XL which like the Bomber XL will be a big bat with some weight behind it.
