On Drive
« on: July 03, 2014, 04:44:05 PM »

Any tips/drills for the on drive?
Seems to be my downfall at the moment as I either try to turn my bat and work it square on the leg side or play an on drive and can't seem to hit it along the ground.
Cheers.

Watch the ball as long as possible and play as late as possible, leading with your head and aim to hit straight, i.e. play the shot like a straight drive and the angle of delivery will take the ball through mid on.

the on drive is difficult because you have to get your front leg (led by your head) out side the line of the ball.
if you play around your front pad you are in trouble.

the key, for me, then is to get your head across, and to play a punch shot. you have to try and time it, not over hit the ball.

think Sir Geoff reaching his 100th hundred.

to practice use an old tennis ball and do some drop feeds, starting with the off drive, going straight then the on drive.

hope that helps.

keep shape , just don't try to hit it too hard. A slightly open stance would help align better and don't go searching for it.

This may or may not be helpful, but...

A few years back I was having trouble with my batting, due to opening up my shoulders because my back foot wasn't staying square. This meant that I was very open and struggled to play well on the off side. However, this meant that I had opened up my leg side scoring options significantly. Anyway, what this has to do with the ondrive is that it is one of the only shots where it is recommended that your back foot does not stay square, meaning you can open yourself up to access the leg side better.
So my advice would be to allow your back foot to swivel and face straight whilst playing the shot. But don't do this with other shots!!
Hope this helps!

Don't overthink it, see ball, hit ball. Just spend some time in the nets (on a machine if possible) practicing it.

I spent a session in the winter in the on drive, basic principals are get your foot in the right place and play with a straight bat. My coach was great in that they accepted you wouldn't play every shot like the textbook says you should, so worked with what I had rather than re-modelling every shot.

You need your head/weight going in the right direction. Sounds like if your playing to the leg side your weight is falling over to the off side.

Practice with drop feeds, but get into the correct stance first and play the shot on one leg (front leg). To ensure you are balanced your weight must be over your front leg. Then progress up to following where you're hitting the ball. Eg set a cone up where you would like the ball to be hit. Once you've hit it instead of holding the pose dead still, follow through with the bat straight a run towards that cone. If your weight is going where you want it to it should feel natural. Then progress by doing these with throw downs, half volley length, then set the bowling machine up for half volley on mid/leg stump.

Good luck.

Oh and before any of this have a look at your grip set up. Where does the V of you're thumb and first finger on your top hand point to? Outside edge, down the spine or somewhere in between.
