One Day Cup Crowd - or lack of!

Just watching the Middlesex vs Notts match on Sky. Can't believe how few spectators there are at the game. I know it's mid week and many people at work and it's on tv but there can't be more than a 1,000 or so watching. Obviously over charging, especially during school holiday time.  I'm sorry to say but I'm a Birmingham City fan and while Karen Brady was in charge we were in the lower leagues and were in the LDV Vans Trophy. This is not exactly the Champions League stuff so getting crowds in was rather like the One Day Cup. She introduced a £1 admission charge for these games. As a result on a rainy Tuesday evening 35,000 turned up to watch them play Gillingham. Why doesn't cricket do the same as what they are doing now is clearly not working.

By the way Hales is taking the Middlesex bowlers apart, 131 from just 87 balls so far. Lumb just nudging it about with 63 from 81. 200-0 off 28 overs

I've been to 2 Somerset matches in the last 2/3 weeks.

First was the last T20 game - Friday night - 7800 in, absolutely packed

Last was a Royal London One day cup - Tuesday 10.30 start - don't know how many were in but it was pretty empty, we had the freedom to move around the ground all day and sit in different stands because there were that many free seats!

I certainly didn't enjoy watching the game, it seemed to drift in the middle overs. I spent a lot of time in the shop or at M&H or eating to try and amuse myself.

I think it's good they have done 50 overs and mirrored the one day game, but it is a bit boring!

As an unemployed student and cricket lover, I thought over the summer I will catch some games while the partner is at work etc.

Then I looked at the ticket price for a midweek nondescript game and I was shocked. Once you have a pint of your favourite ale and maybe a hot dog your looking at silly money!

If it had been £1 to get in I would happily spend the same money on beer etc but on top its nuts.

As a Surrey fan, I question why so few of these games are on a weekend? Surely you'd have county games Sun-Wed then a Sat game (or Mon-Thurs, Sat) to get the big crowds in.

Been/going to three tests this summer;

2nd test @ Lords - £110
3rd test @ Ageas Bowl - £55
5th test @ The Oval - £90

None of these tests has been a sell out - spare seats all over the place (regardless of what the ticketing companies may say). More should be done to allow the public to attend for reasonable prices.

I was talking to a lad I taught Business to last year, who is at Middx right now. He has been told every game Middx plays at Lords loses Middx huge amounts of money. So much so, they are trying to play more games @ Uxbridge/Southgate etc. Much to the annoyance of the MCC.

I know Middx have very little control over prices at Lords (Bacon and Eggs have that pleasure) and suffer as a result. However, for the 2nd test at Lords, U16s were £10 a ticket. Loss leaders in this case benefit everyone. More should be done.

Most of your target audience are playing/involved in cricket at the weekends. I know Friday night T20 is where the real money is for county sides.

Tried to go to Yorkshire vs derby at chesterfield a queens park, but got turned away as too busy.


As that's not a normal county ground, one of the one offs, maybe for decent crowds, the one day tournament round robin games, should be fully played at one of venues, I.e decent club grounds etc

I was at the Yorkshire vs Derbyshire game. Was a great atmosphere. Lots of people in a small ground!

Personally not too keen with the compressed tournament style this year, they realise its not working for T20 so what do they do? Change it to OD games instead... I'd just prefer all competitions spread throughout the season.

The only way a compressed competition like this will draw in crowds is if it were some kind of t20 franchise thing I think.

i went to the Yorkshire v glouc game, couple of weeks ago, turned up and it was busy, I was surprised at the amount of people in for a midweek one day game 10:30 start. my guess was a fair few free tickets may have been given t schools and clubs as seemed to be a lot of kids there with uninterested parents. price were high as well I thought compared to previous visits to headingley, £22 for an adult, luckily as I was in the turnstile some random lad gave me a complimentary ticket, he had a few and as just dishing them out, so saved myself £22. Ridiculous when it only costs students and kids £5
