Powder coated vs stainless steel grilles
« on: August 20, 2014, 11:24:12 PM »

Evening all

After a conversation with my Dad (who's worked in engineering all his life) I'm curious why these grilles are considered the way they are.

Firstly, is a powder coated grille lighter than a stainless steel one? Having not weighed them next to each other I'd guess the cheaper one weighs less. Do you not tend to pay for lighter items when buying protective equipment?

Why is a powder coated grille cheaper than a stainless steel one (and what is the purpose of a stainless one when you could offer just powder coated or ti?)

Interested to hear people's opinions on this.

I can't see much of an advantage with stainless apart from the fact that its less likely to corrode. In fact stainless steel is actually a little bit softer than mild steel and weighs about the same.

I think powder coated ones are made from aluminium which is cheaper and may be less durable.

Most aluminium grades would be too soft for the grill but definitely not cheaper than mild steel.

If you look at the brinell tests,  you'll see aluminium around 15, mild steel around 150 and stainless around 200.

Titanium comes in at around 152 on the Brinell scale.

Stainless steel is harder to work and weld,  although titanium isn't the easiest,  and as with all steels,  tends to be heavier.

Powder coating is simply applying a finish to a metal and doesn't provide any kind of strength benefit.

The other thing to bear in mind is ductility,  or whether the material well bend or break under extreme load....

aah Yes I remember the gateman going on about powder coating and gloss finish when we had new gates done.

Powder coating gives a better finish to metals and offers better protection to the metal used. It is a thicker finish also, and is probably why it is heavier than stainless steel.
Stainless is more expensive to make compared to the cost of normal steel, so even when you cost in for galvanising first or shot blasting and powder coating stainless is more expensive. Also stainless is no more difficult to weld than standard steel.

Ok here goes:

- Powdercoating is a cheap, durable finish for protecting steel from corrosion.
- Stainless steel isn't a finish, it's a material.
- Aluminium would not be used for grills for a lot of reasons, would not be powdercoated (what would be the point), and is a lot more expensive than steel!

If one grill was made from normal mild steel and powdercoated, it would most likely be heavier than a similar stainless steel grill without coating. The actual grilles will weigh roughly the same, but the powdercoat will add weight (not sure how much it would be on a grill, but powdercoating can add almost 3/4 pound in weight to a bike frame, for example).
Stainless steel is more expensive both to produce and work with, hence stainless steel products generally cost more than mild steel ones. Advantages of stainless are that it looks nicer (yes it does), and the corrosion resistance is actually an inherent property of the material, not something that can be worn off over time by cricket ball impacts/putting in and out of bags etc.
