GM Mogul 404
« on: August 27, 2014, 11:11:09 AM »

So it's the second day of my holiday in Australia. And just like every other time I return to Australia, I take a wander down to local GCCC in Rosebery, Sydney. As expected I was the only customer in the store (it was a Wednesday afternoon) and I took my time to check everything out. I was really keen to see the GN Elite as I really wanted a Stu K made bat. Even at AU$400+, I was willing to take the plunge. Unfortunately they only had one of those on the rack and it was a bit heavy for me.

So I wandered over to check out the GMs, even though most are quite expensive. Then I see a 2.8 Mogul and took it off its hook and gave it a few swings. It had a very light pickup with a nice even profile and very little concaving. So anyway I'll let the pics do the talking...

I'm extremely happy with the looks of this bat. For a 404, it has 6 very evenly spaced grains (which run through quite straight through the toe), a strip of heartwood and very few blemishes. It is also pretty big for the weight with 40-41mm edges and a spine of around 58-60mm. Very decent for a 2.8 with very little concaving. I don't tend to knock bats very hard in store so to see some indentations, I would say it is a on the soft side. Not as soft as my H4L but no too far from it. Response off the mallet was pretty good. I won't say it's a cannon but it still needs a fair bit of knocking in. But it shows a lot of promise.

For the size and looks, AU$190 (£107) was a very reasonable price. Looking forward to using this in the upcoming season in HK.

Yeah, I saw that one in the store and it was ok performance wise, but it picked up really lightly. Good luck with it.

£107 for a 404? That's the price of a 606 here!

Nice looking bat though mate, hope you're happy with it :)

Looks like you found yourself a little gem! I wish GM provided bats here without the scuff and toe guards! I really hate having to round edges with the scuff on, and find that I now much prefer to knock in before I scuff up!

Having just rounded the edges on my new GM I agree with you here, although I've got a little trick for doing it now!  ;)

Edge tape and the tiniest bit of oil normally does the trick. ;) Still, it's a pain to do!

And do all Aussie GMs come with Driguard instead of ToeTek?

Driguard is used on UK GM models as well as ToeTek.

I spoke to GM about this subject, retailer (and I guess customer) feedback from the Southern Hemisphere is for bats not to be fitted with a toe guard. I wasn't aware they didn't come with scuff sheets, but you shouldn't need to knock in a GM anyway, so having a pre-fitted scuff sheet isn't a problem in my opinion.

You shouldn't have to as they claim GM now means they're ready to play.
However the edges always need rounding I've found, and being the cynical person I am I don't believe they can have knocked a bat in properly if they haven't rounded the edges.
Just my opinion and probably nonsense...

If you saw Hales bat go today, you can see why they need them in the UK! :-[
