Hi guys
Following sending a PM with this picture to another forum member who asked for some advice, I thought it might be a good idea to post it publicly.
The question I was asked was "
Does the grill you fitted to your Albion have better coverage than the new style?"
The simple answer to this is yes, but I was curious as to why.
As you can see the old style grille is actually larger than the new one, not by much, but noticeable in the picture.
The second contributing factor is the fact you can adjust the old style grille in more ways than the new style.
The new grille is designed to ensure the gap between the peak is smaller than a ball. However, I have the gap on mine slightly wider than the new fixed grille, while still smaller than the size of a ball and the coverage of my chin(s) is vastly improved.
The verdictIn short the coverage is better from the old style a Albion grille than the new one, and it's more adjustable.
In my opinion having more coverage is safer than less, and the fact you can keep a gap smaller than a cricket ball to achieve this tells me the old style grille is potentially safer than the new style.
At the end of the day it's a personal decision, but I'd rather have the old style to cover more of my face/chin/neck area while keeping a small gap. I can see why the old style grille is deemed as "less safe", as you can set the gap large enough to fit a bus through it, but with a bit of common sense it is still a very good (and safe) grille. It may not pass the new BSI test standards, but I will more than happily use mine for as long as it lasts (or until I fancy another new lid!)
