Overseas Pro Costs
« on: February 06, 2015, 12:10:13 PM »

My club are currently looking for an overseas pro for the 2015.

We played one league below a ECB premier league so we want someone of proven quality.

We've had this for the previous 6/7 season and have always found players at a reasonable price.

However this year it seems even average players are requesting flights, accommodation and £100+ per week.

I would be interested to know what other clubs have found this year and what other clubs offer their overseas pros.

They will all want 'packages' if you go through an agency. Unless of course you get the players listed as 'amateur' and even then some of them have big demands. It is the agents job to blow smoke up their (No Swearing Please) and make them think they are deserving of something better, meaning a bit extra for the agent ;)

Your best bet is to try and strike up a deal with a club overseas and get a steady stream of players going in each direction to the mutual benefit of both clubs and their promising young lads looking for an adventure on the other side of the world. It's something we have done with University of Queensland Cricket Club and has worked well.

We've used agent before, and will again no doubt. They definitely have their place. But if you are looking for a proven performer you are probably going to have to shell out a bit. The easiest way is to incentivise them. £100 per week come what may just isn't worth it. Structure it in terms of season bonuses, make coaching the kids compulsory etc.

From what I remember from various post match beer discussions Pro's in the national leagues seemed to cost their club anything from 10-20k for the season.

Waste of money. Why not pay an English pro?! No accommodation or job needed...

Ps. One of the pro's round here was costing his club £450 a game plus accommodation, job and bonuses!

What's to stop you paying a county 2nd XI player?

Basically the same thing as most overseas pro's - unless we are talking something ridiculous eg. A current test match/ODI player?

why?

play for x club and don't get paid.. or play a div or two lower nad get paid... if you are 28+ then why not, if you've been there and done it so to speak then why keep flogging yourself. Drop down, take the money. Not that I think paying players is right, build the club up rather than bring in players. If you need to buy in then your club isn't as good as you think

just my 2p's worth, I'm sure others think paying players is fine.

Played with and against a fair few in Northants (including against OP's club) and in Glos and tbh, personally the only two I saw that were a class above where Jefta and le Reux from Oundle. The rest were just avg players or home players being paid and werent' anything special. I'm not saying all are bad though, I have seen two at other clubs who aren't anything special as players but are very good off the field and the kids love them as they just think 'oh a pro' nad listen to them. nothing worse than playing a club where 10 players do nothing/very little but that pro scores a 100 and takes 4+ wickets.. It's a little gutting as you just know you've been beaten by money not the club. again just an opinion. I'm sure some clubs love having the pro around to ensure victory
