Wanting To Start Seam Up bowling
« on: March 11, 2015, 07:40:15 AM »

Hey guys in my younger days I use to bowl a bit of seam up bowling but changed for the past 7/8 years to bowling off spin. Being mainly a batsmen recently my off spin has gone to the dogs and am now a pure batsmen. Wanting to further my Cricket i want to change to seam up bowling as i believe more teams would rather a seam bowling all rounder than a part time spinner.

I'm 20 years old and I know I wont ever bowl Brett Lee speed or something but I believe with enough work and commitment I can eventually bowl 130kph hopefully one day.
So as a seam bowlers starting out what are some tips you guys can give me? and any videos or tutorials you guys could just nudge me in the correct direction.

Any help is much appreciated!

Dont know if its just my team, but we always want more spinners, a lot of the time all you have to do is lob it up and stick someone who can catch at cow to get stavks of wickets!

Having not bowled seam up since you were 12 and you're 20 now, I'd be impressed if you got up to 80mph!  Very few bowlers in club cricket can touch those heights, but if you think you can, fair play.

80mph, why bother?
It's always those blokes who bowl 35mph seam up but can pitch it on a 5p coin every ball who get the wickets!

The best bowler year-in year-out in the ECB Essex Prem is a left arm swing bowler who bowls about 50-55mph and is probably in his mid-40s.  He took 58 wickets at 14 a piece in the league last year... Pace isn't everything.

Bowler bowling 80mph is far easier to face than a canny, accurate and nibbling 55-60mph bowler. People focus too much on pace at club level.. It's more about accuracy and doing something with the ball

Sounds like my sort of thread. 65-70mph seam up bit of swing sometimes. Dont want too much. Nibble off the pitch. Gets me 50 wickets every year. Run in in a straight line. Simple repeatable action. Dont let the batsman change what your doing. If he wants to drive over your head good. Thats where your fielders are. Bowl to just miss off full so he has to drive. But noo room to cut. Dont drop your field to deep its not where most catches go. short third man / fly slip to left handers and drag them wide.

And if you can. Develop a leg cutter. Best ball on the planet to right handers.

I 2nd concentrate on moving the ball around over trying to reach 80mph in league cricket. My bro takes takes 50 wickets a season bowling in duckers at about 60mph, he sets the same field game on game and bats get out to it every time season after season. However if you can move it at 80mph you may make a living out of it ;)

Forget pace, a decent batman will use the pace to steer easy runs. If you move the ball you will always get wickets.,Our most successful 2 bowlers are both over 40, bowl barely quicker than a spinner but swing it, seam it and put every ball on a length on and just outside off. They make it look easy.

Hello mate. If you are only 20 years old then why shouldn't you want to try and bowl quick.
I will give it some thought and get back to you. If you have the commitment to run in hard and get fit, bowl full on English wickets there will be a place for you. You can always slow down and be a thoughtful old bowler down the track.

Hi Aman. Having given your question some thought and having been through it myself here are my thoughts.
Firstly you need to get lots of miles in your legs because generally good pace comes from a solid consistent runup, plus the fitness enables you to keep good technique during those hard spells. The running will help strengthen your core and legs to help the body cope with the rigours of trying to bowl quick, which is hard work.
After you have that fitness base you need to work hard in the nets to get consistency ith pace plus your line and length. At that point it would be handy to have someone to check on you from time to time, preferably an ex county player who has been through it all himself. Good luck and go for it .
