Well, it's not done yet.

I grabbed a handled cleft from Red Ink, and I received it the other day, I think he said it weighed about 3'10 in its cleft state.

I went to work at it armed with a chisel, a mallet, a spokeshave, and a sander.

Its still in a pretty rough state, and needs some spine and edge reducing and then sanding.

in it's current state it it weighs about 2'10 and a half, with an edge size of 39mm and picks up really well even without a grip/binding.

Any comments would be muchly appreciated.

Nice work. That's not bad with the tools you have. How much did you pay for the handled cleft?

It's a decent effort mate! Can come down further three ounces with proper sanding and the finish will look much better then. You have plenty of edge size to play with at the moment. Try bringing the edge size to around 32 and the naked weight should drop around 3 ounces.

Cheers boys, yeah there is definitely weight to be taken off in some places. Am interested in a slightly heavier bat so wont need to take to much off. Handy advice though, and the edges will some down.

I's about 2'10, had it bound at Bradbury by Paul for free, which was nice. It's still not finished, just because of the person that I am.

If you're referring to the thinness:

1) I wanted a bat that picked up well, and being in Australia with generally bouncier wickets I thought it could work.

2) I accidentally took to much off.

It does look particularly odd in these pictures, but it is a long blade so I guess I can always just cut an inch off the toe?

I was a little puzzled by the toe aswell so perhaps John and I are on the same wavelength.....

I was wondering why it had such a pronounced ridge all the way through the toe. Almost like a Kookaburra Ridgeback and GM Luna used to have on the spine before they flattened out.

Why did you choose to keep a large ridge rather than a flatter or less pronounced spine running right to the toe?

Good effort with the bat though. I am envious of people's abilities to craft one as I know I would be horrific!

Oh yes, of course!

Because the toe is on the thinner side, I thought it best to keep a bit somewhere in the toe. I have thought about making it less pronounced though.

I've also seen it on a few bats on there, perhaps not lately although I have been rather absent, but I do believe the older M&H Distinctions (I'll try find some pictures) once had a similar toe, as well as M&H Puma that a mate of mine had.

I also just really love a curvy bat, if you know what I mean.

Thanks lads, it was a whole lot of fun! It taps up beautifully as I'm sure all Red Inks do.

Nice work on the bat. The grains are good and almost straight. The edges needs a bit of concaving. I personally like slight concaved edges, gives great pickup. All in all nice job.
