New top grade bat with hairline crack
« on: April 16, 2015, 06:40:27 PM »

Been offered a high end grade 1 bat made to my requirements with a hairline crack in shoulder for £150. I realise it could be asking how longs a piece of string but anyone got a clue how long it could last? Would you risk it?

Depends, what makes it a better bat than a 150 quid g2?

If it has awesoem ping, perfect weight, and a lovely pick up, may be worth taking the gamble, glue in the crack, and tape up from the off.

But if the gamble is purely based on g1 looks, I'd run. Very very fast.

Got £25 extra? Visit the bat maker too if you like

A small crack on the shoulder shouldn't make any difference at all.

Why don't you offer £100 /120,

Jake beat me to it!
Was going to say for an extra £25 Hubts will do the same thing without a crack in the bat (they may drill it if you ask though)  ;)

Usually a small hairline crack should not be a problem as shoulders play no part in how the bat performs.
Should the crack start to open up you could consider removing the shoulders particularly  if the crack is near the top.of the bat.

Hairline crack in the shoulder area should be avoided as that's one section of a bat that can be very hard if not impossible to repair.

Cheers guys. It was made for me by a well known company but the crack was noticed at finishing stage. In terms of looks, not bothered, was just the bit of wood that felt perfect when i picked it out. No idea if the ping was special. Swinging towards leaving it. Cheers for the advice
