Advice please
« on: April 27, 2015, 08:26:12 PM »

Good bat-fixing gents of CBF, I would like your advice. I'm fixing a teammates bat for him, and am torn on what course of action to take. As shown, he's cracked the corner of the toe half off. I've done similar fixes before, once where it was badly broken so I cracked the broken piece off completely before glueing it back in place, and once where the crack wasn't too bad so I just glued and clamped it. As it's half way, I'm torn over whether to remove or not! If it was my own bat I'd probably just break the piece off and get on with it, but as it belongs to someone else I don't want to risk making the damage much worse, so am inclined to try getting plenty of glue in there and clamping it up, but am not convinced the break will close too well that way. Thoughts?

With that one I'd be more inclined to put a heck of a lot of glue in there then clamp it.

As it's snapped but still attached the wood should be mostly lined up where it was pre break.
Once the glue has dried and it's solid I'd be inclined to dowel it too, but thats just me!

Looking at it I don't think glue and clamping will hold up  you could try glue clamp and binding  personally I would glue clamp and dowel.

Yeah definitely planning on doweling it too, just need to get the broken piece glued back into place first. Thanks chaps, backed up my uncertainty over breaking it off. Will go to town with glue and clamp and post results after I've doweled him up!

You'll need to hammer that back into place if you decide not to break it off and re-align it.

Had to take it off in the end, wouldn't line back up nicely with just clamping. Came out quite well after glueing back in and doweling, general clean up and a coat of oil and she'll be good to go again.
