my first two bats!
« on: December 15, 2009, 08:56:38 AM »

Hi all,

Just thought I'd shard my first two attmepts! please don't be too harsh as i did enjoy mking them!

The one with the maroon grip weighs about 2lbs 11oz and is a fairly traditional shape with some nice chunky edges.

The one with the green grip weighs about 2lb 9oz and has a concaved back.

I'm sure they won't be to everyone's taste, but I love the feel of them, especially the maroon gripped bat. Feel free to comment!

Cheers, K

Spot on - those look like they were quite hard bits of willow to work with the graping on the back of the blade - nice looking shapes from the pictures but hard to see the profiles very well.

What tools do you have out of interest?

Harris bats going to be the name of your company then??  I see your interested in making the press so that can only mean one thing.

Jamie I have modified your post to put the pics into it, just copy and past the IMG code at the bottom of photobucket to get them in view for reference.

Cheers

Tom

PS they look very smart for a 1st attempt half tempted to give this ago myself but think my time in going to be taken up with the helmets predominently.

Thanks Tom, much appreciated, wasn't really sure what i was doing!

Thanks for the positive comments SS, as i'm sure you know it's great fun and very easy to get carried away! Will try and post some profile pics later.

Ha ha, harris bats! Hadn't really thought of a name but why not, I like it! I'm not really looking to take on the world, but possible like yourself if i could sell a few so I could buy some more clefts to practice some more then I'd be very happy. Still got the day job to think of first unfortunately! Yes, I would like to build a press, but think thats easier said than done, as I've loved playing with these part mades but would love to have a crack at the whole process.

I have a few little wooden planes which I got from a boot fair which I love, a round bottom wooden plane which i used for the concaving, a staney no4,and a spokeshave. Got a drawknife but not very confident with it as yet, and nearly lost a toe on my first go!

Purely based on that comment alone which made me laugh, email me if you need help, pointers etc with anything including the press if you don't get any replies from the other bat makers on here.

PS: I've had a drawknife drop off a beam it was hooked onto and slice through the back of my fingers

thank god for that, it almost sounded serious for a minute. A little tip for you Andy, use a blunt drawknife like mine, minimises the risk of these things happening and it turns a bat making session into a serious workout for your arms - two birds one stone, i thankyou :)

thanks norbair, that would be great! Need all the help with the press i can get, ha ha! Like I mentioned, I have a few idea's down on paper, but I suspect when I actually try and put them into practice i will hit a few problems. As i say, this is really just a hobby, but something that I seem to be spending more and more time thinking about, much to the wifes annoyance.

I think it may well be the picture distorting the colour a bit, as as I look at it here it is no darker (or orangey?) than the others, although it is a bit darker on the inside edge (RH). My 3 part mades came from Matt H4L but think they are all English, but no expert. They aren't the best grades, but tbh I wanted to start with grade 2's and 3's for first couple incase I ruined them.
