Hi all,
Just starting out in bat making and would like to know if there is a way to determine what weight you can expect a finished bat based on a raw cleft weight. I have a number of clefts weighing from 2lb 13oz up to 3lb 7oz. These have not had handles fitted as yet. Appreciate any comments.

Two ends to the spectrum; either experience and make 100s if not 1000s of bats. Or go down the engineering route and start with a CAD model of the finished bat, trim your cleft to a known volume (length and profile) and weigh it to determine the density first making sure you know the moisture content. You can then work out the volume * density from the CAD model to determine your final weight . Don't forget to add 2-3oz for dressing (binding, grip, stickers etc.) Easy!

depends who your getting them off kippax clefts are massive so weigh more.

have they already been cut to size pressed? planed etc?

2lb 13 for a cleft is either amazingly light or pretty tiny.

Presume they are machined/ cleaned up to a rough size? What size are they atm?

Depends on the cut of the blade to begin with, as simmy says all mine are oversized so tend to weigh more for that reason than say something from Wright's.
