Stiffening up a whippy handle
« on: August 22, 2015, 12:04:00 PM »

I picked up a secondhand bat on the cheap and it's a bit of a steal. My only concern with it is that the handle is too whippy for me. Is there anyway to stiffen it up? I'm thinking of re-binding it. Has anyone done this and noticed a stiffer handle?

You could try taping the handle before rebinding or double binding depending on how thick you like the handle. You may find when you strip the handle that the layers may be coming apart slightly so that may need glueing which will help.

Zinc oxide tape round the handle?
Extra layer of binding?

If it was a steal is a re-handle a viable option?

It is probably wippy due to loose loose layers as suggested have you checked for tightness in the vee.

The V looks and feels solid and I've put weight on it and the flex seems to feel as though it's in the handle. Is there a specific way to determine how solid the V is?
@WalkingWicket37 I'll give the repair a crack and if that fails I'll get it rehandled.
@Red Ink Cricket I'm going to remove the old binding and double bind it as I use 2 grips anyway, would it end up being similarly thick? In re-glueing the handle layers, should I just treat it like a crack? Syringe, glue, clamp, set?

Yes lean on the handle in your normal stance does it move in the vee 2 pick the bat up blade facing downwards wave it up and down. Repair re glue handle as your post with  1 wrap of tight binding build up handle thickness with grips as this will assist pickup.
