Bat nerds (including myself) seem to be obsessed with the idea of grains running "straight through the toe", instead of being wavy in the toe. To the extent that I almost threw up when I removed a toe guard from a 14 grainer, only to discover that the grains, while dead straight on the face, were actually quite wavy as they went through the toe.

Wonder what the consensus is here...yet another cosmetic obsession, or does it actually impact performance / durability?

I believe it's better of so as the force from ball impact runs through these and out of the bat if the grains run over a larger area then more of the bat is subject to the force which can impact durability.
I may have explained that awfully but in essence I think it's a good thing to have in a bat.

I care less about durability (always need an excuse to buy a new one) than performance - as do most bat nerds I guess?

Yes Chris is correct also  straight grains through the toe helps  make the toe stronger

From memory, of the bats that I have, the only one with poker straight grains through the toe is a butterfly. Whether it makes bats more durable or not I couldn't say - I don't hit the ball often enough...

Doesn't matter what the grains are like, the toe is not going to ping!

Yes. But the theory says that the straighter the grains through the toe, the better the ping of the entire bat.

It is this theory that I was asking about
