How Old Linseed Oil Is Too Old
« on: January 28, 2016, 03:43:57 AM »

I have a Quart that I am using for 5 years. Is that too old? Could old linseed oil damage a bat?

Its a win win - not too old, happy days... Too old and bat gets damaged, you get to buy a new one!

In all seriousness, I don't think the oil itself can rot. Its only the wood that will rot if you douse it in too much oil.

Only time it's unusable is when the oil congeals like glue.

Bat Wax doesn't last that long. 2 years max in my experience.

You need to store it out of direct sunlight I believe as well, other than that should be fine for years. My litre bottle has been in the cupboard for years and doesn't look much different to the day I bought it.

tip: heat up the oil a bit  that congeals around the cap in a saucepan and pour back in-perfectly fine.

Is it worth it for such a small amount. I got my bottle from the local hardware shop and it wasn't expensive.

Doesn't that make it bat wax?

You need to add beeswax and possibly turpentine to make bat wax. I have the ingredients but haven't brewed up yet!
