Coming back
« on: February 27, 2016, 08:02:03 AM »

Hi guys,

I'm starting my first proper season for 6 years! I used to play an alright level. Played some WEPL albeit averaging 12 and some 2s. I didn't play for a while as lost s bit of love for it! However, realised I was being an idiot and am now getting back into it. Has anyone done similar? What aspects of the game were hard to get back?

Cheers,

Tam

Hi Tam

I had about the same break from cricket as you and rejoined playing a very competitive presidents grade (35+). Picking up the shortball was an issue but not many in the grade challenge you for pace so I predominately jump on the front foot and go from there.

After a couple of games it will all start flowing back.

I just wish I'd not feel like I'd been run over by a freight train after each game but alas that's the joys of old age.

Had a 20 year break. My only issue was that I couldn't move as quickly and I couldn't throw as hard. Apart from that it was a bit like riding a bike.

I had a year break recently due to my father's ill health and due to not enjoying it as much. It wasn't long enough to make me forget any of the skills I already had (some would say I didn't have many in the first place!) although it did help me rediscover my passion for the game and make me realise what I want enjoying and that I needed to change it.

Good luck starting back

I'm coming back this year after 19 years away. Have been netting with a local team - full of uni students who are 15+ years younger than me (I'm 38 this year).

Thankfully, I'm fitter now than when I used to play regularly (which is one of the reasons I've got the bug again so massively) but my ability to pick length has significantly lessened.

Like you, I am also having a hard time with my footwork and getting myself into balanced positions, particularly against anything 70mph+. Am relying quite massively on back foot shots to give myself time to see the ball onto the bat. This may "carry me" in the nets but forcing myself onto the front foot on a low slow early season wicket is going to be another matter. I was never a thumper of the ball, more a gentle stroke maker who favoured back foot drives and cutting and glancing (came from my dad doing throw downs to me when I was 9 on a poured concrete bit of our back garden with one of those old rubber and cement balls (which unsurprisingly don't seem to be around any more!).

Anyhow, I'm really trying not to embarrass myself. My son is 4 and he's showing some interest so have started hot housing him too. I'm also into cycling so I've made sure he cycles 3 miles a day to school and back!

I can't believe I spent 19 years drinking and not playing now! What a waste (sort of).
