Batting Video (Be kind!)
« on: March 07, 2016, 09:13:59 PM »

https://youtu.be/qV2lgWvM0NE

Any advice on technique / improvements I can make to my game would be massively appreciated. I'm a 2nd XI player, so I'm far from perfect and the quality of bowling on show was pretty poor even by our standards.

To put it nicely, I'm on the slightly larger side(!), so I seem to struggle to get my head inline with the ball when playing a shot. When I do, because I'm top heavy I tend to fall over myself and become an LBW candidate.

Playing the ball slightly away from my body seems to help, but you'd think I'd nick off a lot, which isn't actually the case so I must have a decent(ish) eye for a ball?

Anyway... like I say - any tips would be massively appreciated.

See what you're saying about playing away from your body. But you do seem to have a good eye for the cut and pull. Just work on getting that front foot to the pitch.

Noticed that you like to walk after anything hit straight though, see Buzz's video below on how to stop that and keep your shape.

If your looking to learn to stay more compact, see AB's video below on "Box Theory".

Oh, and somebody tell the guy in the blue polo to stop using his feet!  >:(

Certainly see what you mean about me going for a wander. I've got another net session on Thursday so I'll try and work on that then. Just going back to playing away from my body I think I struggle as well because I've got large shoulders - trying to get my arms down in such a tight area is really, really hard.

In terms of the kid in the blue polo shirt - duly noted! I hit one back at him in the video which he stopped with his shin - not a good thing to do!

Could you be struggling to get your head inline because of your feet positioning?  You batting on centre there ? I always out my feet on centre then it gives me much more room at the crease to open up the off and leg side. May stop you reaching for the ball a little.

To be honest I normally bat on centre / middle & leg, don't know why I'm so far outside on this occasion.

I may post another video after Thursday so I'll make a concerned effort to put that right then. Thanks for the tip.

Looks like you're pretty comfortable on the cut/pull or sweep, but you're struggling to time anything nicely with the straight bat drives. Agree with the above comments about going for a wander - at the point of contact on a lot of the straight drives you're completely front on. Buzz video on keeping your back foot still and trying to keep your shape through the shot and importantly the follow through when you're on the front foot will go a long way I think, I'd keep it as simple as that.

There are certain deliveries that are better left. I saw you swing at some balls far side of off and leg. Just leave those balls. Part of developing a technique (as I am working on) is to leave risky balls.

You're right. Tried to put all of the above into practice yesterday and let's just say it's a work in progress....  :-[ Got bowled once and got hit on the toe to a fast swinging one - probably out LBW.

I need to get it into my head that nets isn't all about playing a shot every ball. Still seem to be having trouble staying compact and not being toppling over.

p
I wouldn't worry about not smashing every ball in the nets.. I'm yet to see more than a handful not just tonk every ball in nets

In order to get the right mind set, I have started to net with an objective of not getting out. In some practices, I net with rules that an edge or a bowled would be an out and I would rotate out of the net. It translated well into my matches last season. Try it: No edges, no bowled deliveries. Build a discipline to stay in and keep batting. Play shots when you get the ball in your zone.
