Which tape to strap ankle
« on: May 25, 2016, 12:35:36 PM »

After bowling I have pain in my left (front foot) ankle as I sometimes roll it. I want to strap it to give more support. Would I be better off with a rigid strapping tape like zinc oxide tape or something with a little give in it like an elastic adhesive bandage?

Sports tape for structure. Kinesio for mechanoreception.. How bad is it?

I don't really know how bad it is, but if i don't land with my ankle flat it can cause me to collapse in my action. It can hurt after landing badly but not so much that I cant run it off. If I bowl a lot it can be a little sore the next day.

I'm blessed with a glass ankle, which caused me issues a couple of seasons ago.
I used kinesio tape to do a botch job on it one week (when I damaged it fielding) and wore a proper ankle support after that. If it's a long term think you're better off buying a decent support than taping it up in my opinion.

What sort of support did you get, I want to restrict lateral motion so I don't roll it but still allow longitudinal motion. If that makes sense.

I've basically always strapped my ankles and I did my knee quote badly a few years ago, surgery and 10 months off, so now strap that too.

The physio that i did my reconstruction gave me the reverse advise to WalkingWickets.
Taping allows you to get a customised fit every time and also allows you to put the support exactly where you need it.
While a guard is convenient, it does't cover all of your exact needs.

At the least, go and see a decent sports physio so they can give you the correct strapping for your exact need.
If you're pretty serious about your cricket and your injury is possibly preventing you performing to your peak, preventing further selection etc, also look into a podiatrist.

I got some really good orthotics and some additional strapping techniques that gave me a massive improvement in my ankles, which were similar from what you described.

I use to have a similar problem last season. I found the stretchy adhesive stuff from boots (£2-3 a roll) was excellent. Would use about half a roll a game.

Also I guess there is no harm in trialing different tapes (stretchy or zinc), and if that doesn't work out maybe a more rigid ankle brace.

I got one of these, which keeps everything in the right place and prevents any rolling I don't want.

Reading what @Bat and Ball Cricket said taping does make a lot more sense though

@Bat and Ball Cricket - Thanks, I''ll see if there's a local physio with reasonable pricing. Which sort of tape did you use?

@Nespresco - I've pretty much always used a run of the mill 3.5cm rigid strapping tape (the brown type). I've mostly used Elastoplast, but one of my club mates is a rep with a medical supplies company and he sorted me out this year.
I've got sensitive skin so always use hypoallergenic under wrap and more recently, foam wrap for under my knee strapping.
If you don't have an allergy to the zinc oxide, using under wrap is really personal preference. I've found support is very close to the same, but much, much easier to get off.

You'll find your Physio will either love under wrap or see it as a complete waste of money. I've seen a couple and you don't tend to find an in between.
