Newbery SPS Branding
« on: January 09, 2017, 02:49:39 AM »

Sorry if this is a naive and stupid question, but I always wondered what the SPS stands for in Newbery grading? Anyone knows?

From memory it's Special Pro (or possibly players) Selection or at least something of that ilk.

Always wondered that myself! I'm sure Jason from Cricket Store Online explained it in a video a few years ago but I can't find it.

I always thought it was sponsored players series

which is why when you went down there to buy one you walked out 10 feet tall...............even thou you went to use it you were still at the same club, same pitch and has the same problems and were not 'sponsored'

Sponsored Players Specials I think it used to be.

So seems like it could be Sponsored Players/Pro Special/Selection. Does that mean that buying an off the shelf SPS bat would be the same quality as the sponsored pros bats? If so, it doesnt explain then why the pressing on the Kudos2 SPS would be better than the pressing on the other Kudos/Krakatoa SPS. Assuming some pros would be using the Kudos/Krakatoa/..  SPS, you would have to believe they had inferior pressed bats compared to the other pro using the Kudos2 SPS which seems quite surprising.

It's just a name @adb club cricketer, sponsored pros would likely get better.

@Tom yes, thats what I thought, but was having a small hope that the SPS we buy off the shelf is actually same as the one a pro has but yea, reality needs to kick in  :)

If a Newbery bat is a pro grade, it will possibly say it on the knob of the handle in biro. It may be under the handle sticker, or around the edge.
