Pain in Shoulder when throwing the ball
« on: April 27, 2017, 10:53:55 AM »

Hello,

Last year I started experience pain in my shoulder when throwing the ball, especially from the boundary. Also lost power in my throw and the ball was only reaching the keeper on a couple of bounces on smallish grounds. Strangely, I am able to bowl as normal and I do not experience any pain when I bowl. I bowl left arm spin and also occasionally bowl medium pace. I do not feel any pain when bowling. But throwing the ball has become a major problem area  :( . Anyone else experience anything similar?

I have had this for about the last 10 years. unfortunately physio and pain killers have barely touched it. Doctors diagnosis was that i had simply 'thrown it out'

things may have changed in terms of treatment since then but am slowly turning into a slip fielder and occasional spinner

there's a thread Motown. I don't know how to post the link - if you search 'golfers elbow'  there's quite a few of us and some good information posted by the forum

you are not alone....

Yep. Many years ago. Rest is the best cure and swim to strengthen it. Bowling will not be a problem as it uses different muscles. Find yourself a lazy spot at gully or mid wicket. If you are really keen you can teach yourself to throw 30 metres left handed which comes in very handy bluffing batsmen when your other arm comes good next season. 😊

Slight off topic but try throwing the ball cross seam. You will notice a significant difference in terms of speed and accuracy.

Try working you rotator cuff using a band, it might alleviate and stop further worsening.

I had the same issue and it turned out to be a rupture, had operation to reattach torn tendon but it's never been the same since. Used to be able to wing it in with ease from the boundary but now requires some effort which results in pain as a result.

One of my mates also had the same problem last year and ever since then he wasn't able to drive or bowl anymore. Remember to stretch before every game. I referred him to go and see my brother who is a sport medicine/orthopaedic doctor. As per brother, he tore his rotator cup muscle.

Thanks for all the advice. Surgery sounds scary...like I mentioned, it has had no effect at all on my bowling. I can still bowl with ease. Its only when I throw the ball that I experience pain...I have searched and found a few videos related to throwing although they are more for pitchers in baseball, but it should be the same principle.
