Coaching tips to improve shot selection
« on: May 01, 2017, 05:48:21 PM »

Hello,

I have been trying to find out videos or tips to help me improve my shot selection, but without much success. Is there any training tips that can help me determine which balls to hit in the air and to which balls it is good to play ground shots. I have been practicing in the nets and everything goes well in nets, but my practice is not getting translated to actual matches. Main reason being I am not able to pick my shots well. Any training tips to improve this is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Jonathan, if you are happy with the way it is going in the nets then matchday is probably a mental thing. When you are batting in a game trust that your eyes will identify the shots that are feeling right. These can vary from time to time. Staying composed is important. If you try too hard to play the big shots you will probably end up back in the shed. Be patient and trust that the ball will land in the zones that favour you. That is what I believe anyway 🙂

I would advise to get as much time in the middle as possible, the more time in the middle, the more confident you will feel and thinking about line, length, where to hit the ball will turn into instinct, you will the start to play the ball all around the park.

picked out a tip from this months cricketer in a Dean Jones interview where he says picking length is at the top of the list at higher level.

we can all practice this indoor on a bowling machine and also if you have out door nets just getting a bowler to bowl at you. This sounds to me like one of the methods everyone can use to improve because it's repetitive in nature and your eye can get trained until you start picking up the length earlier
