He'd only scored 277 against Australia at the SCG before that point, totally hopeless...

Battings a bit different in the UK.

I've used all different weights over the years but predominantly very light e.g. 2lb 5oz harrows. This season I scored a ton in first game using a 2lb 11.6. However not only was the bat weight vastly different but so was my technique. The handle then broke and this put the weight up again. I've actually added a second grip so we are looking at 2lb 14 or there abouts now. I usually open but dropped down to 5 on Sat and was involved in a run chase with spinners at each end, no cuts or pulls. Will be much more interesting when I use it to open against the new ball. I find more important than weight or pick up is feel in the hand. Rather than hundreds of bats I seem to have hundreds of grips. So for me handle size, shape and grip seem to play a big part in my mind.
The game I had to use my lighter bat while my new one was broke I scored 1. That was prob more down to a good bowler bowling a good ball as opposed to the bat though.
However finally there is no doubt that the difference in weight between say 2lb 5 oz and 2 lb 14 oz is noticeable and your technique and range of shorts will be different. In my opinion I can't see 2ozs up or down is one noticeable or two going to affect your batting in any way except possibly in your head!

And 375 against England the winter before he came to Warwickshire.

Well I confess, I'm not a bat-blamer....you know, a few low scores and bin the grade 1 for another grade 1 on the basis it's not getting any runs...but I do 'fiddle around with things a bit here and there'

Your either reading this thinking...ah...I know what he means...or...you just pick up any old weight and do well. I guess there always will be two camps  :)

Anyway not been a great first half of the season so picked up a cheapest lighter bat, about 2-3 oz's lighter than last weeks one and guess what? Stance seems better, more upright, the bat feels better being lighter, and I've started to time a few out of the middle. I generally face a newish ball and a slightly higher middle appears to be working.

So first half of the season I pushed it to use as heavy as I could, second half the complete opposite...

But is it all in the mind I wonder because I can use something heavier and still play with it?

Apologies if this same subject has been posted before and boredom has already kicked in  :)

I never get bored of talking bats and technique...and most important - how to get as many runs as you can
I feel the same. I struggle to find rhythm with a heavier bat when I am out of form. I also struggle to play the pull shot with a heavier bat but if I use a teammate's heavier bat in practice, it makes it a lot easier for me in game with my 2lb, 9oz bat. I play and live in cornwall, where the wickets are very slow and low which would make it difficult to be a back foot player and use a bat with a high middle. Having a bat with a low middle makes the pick-up feel not as nice and makes the bat feel a lot heavier. It does, however, make drives luxurious and give more power of the front foot. I completely understand your situation.
