To vandalise trees is beyond me, what compels someone to do it?

Could be - it's North Nottinghamshire so in reality could be anyone (it was more long term planting with the hope in the future of selling when the trees were mature).

Up until 2 years ago I lived just up the road from the nature reserve

Maybe we should round up some new sets and have a CBF willow planting day together with the Notts wildlife trust. Solidarity within the cricket bat community sort of thing.

Following up on this for the forum. I've been in touch with the guy in charge at the nature reserve. A nightmare for him personally, as well as for the reserve - he's spent the past 2 years pruning all the trees himself. Considerable damage caused, terminal for the trees obviously. He's been in touch with J&S Wrights, with whom they have a relationship and supplied the sets a couple of years ago. Hopefully he can get support from them though there's a cost involved and also it's coming to a very busy time. If that doesn't work out, I've offered what sets I might be able to get hold of, but they will be much younger than those damaged which is sad.

Idiots need to understand that they are not only damaging something that is beautiful now, but they are also limiting access to cricket bats for the next generation - their own kids. If willows are not allowed to grow now, by 2040 we'll have to make bats out of pine.
