Hi,
I have a chance to purchase some new Gecko branded pads in Large for �30. I'm 6' 4".
My questions:
I've never heard of Gecko, are these a reputable brand?
For those that know, are their Mens Large pads suitable for someone of my height?
I won't be able to them try out first as I'll be purchasing them online.
They are very similar to the below in design but better looking:

Lots of players used this kit 3/4 years ago when I lived in Kent were a local brand to a Kent based shop whose name I cant remember never seen them outside of Kent but were always good and used in top leagues

The Geckos did look nice but I've decided to go for some Newbery Triumph pads as they were on sale very cheap. They will do until I know what I want in some pads.
Just hope the Newbery Triumph pads have the protection I need bearing in mind they were so cheap??

What kind of protection do you need?
Unless you're facing 85mph every week I think mid range (think GM 808 or equivalent) are sufficient for most players.

I'm not actually sure what level of protection I need.
Just getting back into the game. Maybe Saturday 2nd XI standard as best before I decide if I need better equipment. Then again saying Saturday 2nd XI could be extremely fast or terribly slow depending on the club/league.

I didn't purchase them from here but the link show the best pics of them.
Are they decend enough for 80mph or am I likely to have my bones broken?

Even ECB premier leagues don�t have bowlers that quick! Mid range pads would be fine for pretty much every club player in terms of protection. It�s the materials used which bump up the price

Why would the materials used bump up the price if they all provide the same (or needed) level of protection? Is it that some materials are lighter whilst providing the same level of protection?

Can you provide your input to the quality/protection provided for the Newbery Triumph pads and gloves (links two posts above)?

It's not they provide the same level of protection, it's the mid-range ones provide more than adequate protection for most levels of club player.

The top end ones might be a bit lighter, potentially, but chances are they just provide even higher level protection, which is probably unnecessary, unless you're planning on getting pinged in the shin by Mitchell Starc any time soon?

On a related topic...any recommendations for pads for someone tall (6'3") which give good protection to and cover the sides of knees well? I somehow end up getting hit atleast a few times every season in that area

How about the Newbery Triumph pads?

I'm the same height as you and bought the oversized mens version. I'm hoping someone in the know say 'yes' the Triumphs are fine.

I'm a leggy 6'3 and the standard Neon pads fit fine. They're ever so slightly wider to allow for wrap around too (something I added in after getting hit myself!). Still pretty light for the level of protection too

The lads are out of stock and the gloves you linked to are Junior gloves.

I�m 6�2 and have never worn anything other than standard sized pads. If you�re getting hit on the side of the knee you need to look at your technique not your pads!

In fairness, the last time I was clocked on the knee was purely down to a dodgy wicket - even having one of the best tracks in Wiltshire doesn't always help!

Ha ha...I never said I had good technique...was just wondering if there are any pads out there which provide protection better than the standard pads.

Make your own mind up, they're only a pair of pads!

Newbery aren't going to sell crap, you'll be more than fine with any mid range pad from most brands. I say brands because most pads on sale today are manufactured in about 4 factories. There's only so many options and you'll find a lot of them are the same, but with a different shape top hat & branding.
