ICC considering scrapping coin toss in Tests....
« on: May 19, 2018, 06:34:59 AM »

Unbelievable this.... and just like the ECB at the moment they have backed it!

Apparently it is to try and reduce home advantage, but surely that has more to do with players not being any good in foreign conditions rather than the toss?

ECB supports ICC's proposal to scrap toss in Test cricket - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/44176355

Going to have to disagree with you on this, which don't happen very often!

Totally in favour of a complete scrapping of the toss and the away side gets to choose

Think about shorter tours, very very poor warm up games for tourists(England just as guilty as anyone else here)
Heat and climate conditions in places like Sri Lanka and India....

And look at us here, let's not pretend we don't prepare pitches to suit our bowlers just like Australia and everywhere else, does it do our team any good in the long run? We win at Trent bridge easy then the same opposition beats us in Brisbane/Bombay/wherever...

Should of been done a long time ago in my view  :). Evens out the odds and the game will be better for it

Don't get it... how exactly would getting rid of the toss reduce home advantage? Let's say a country is planning to doctor their pitches, why would they change their minds if there's no toss? Stats show that winning the toss doesn't have a significant effect on the outcome of the match either, so what's the point? Not to mention that Joe Root won 4 tosses in the last Ashes, we got smashed in all 4 games.

Want to reduce home advantage? Here's a suggestion - decree that limited overs series must always be played before test series, not after. The best players play both formats, so they'll be nicely warmed up for the main event. Warm ups must be first class matches, touring sides do themselves no favours by playing 15-a-side nonsense two day games. There's no need to mess with test cricket, but if you want it to be the pinnacle of the game then treat it that way, simple as that.

Fair enough mate. I can see both sides to the argument but like Edge says the stats aren't there and I simply don't see what difference it would make until we make the conscious changes to prepare better and realise we need a team for away series as well as home etc...

It may well be a start though.

It is exactly that...a start...the other things you and edge mention are dead right but long term

Totally agree the best way to make test series more competitive is have a 5 match limited overs series before the tests

Test cricket needs to be made more competitive, I am a fan of test cricket first and foremost and would hate to see it dwindle...

I fear if this comes into play there will be too many 'meh' pitches , without as much local character , produced too often . Leave it be .
