With the call up of Ollie Pope it is drawn a lot of focus to the fact that Ed Smith has given debuts (if Pope plays at Lords) to 3 x 20 year old's (Dom Bess & Sam Curran being the other 2) since he started as National Selector in March.

There is a definite drive to bring in youth, even bringing back Buttler, who is only 27.

This got me thinking about the age of the England side and where it could go in the next couple of years - obviously it is form dependent - but the ages of the current squad are below in descending order -

Anderson - 36
Cook - 33
Broad - 32
Ali - 31
Rashid - 30
Woakes - 29
Bairstow - 28
Root - 27
Buttler - 27
Stokes - 27
Jennings - 26
Porter - 25
Pope - 20
Curran - 20

So that is 5 that are 30+, 2 x 20 year olds and 7 in there mid to late 20's. If you look at the current/future possible candidates to replace them - please bear in mind i have just thrown a lot of various names down and have probably missed loads!

Clarke - 22
Foakes - 25
Leach - 27
Bess - 21
Crane - 21
Virdi - 20
TRJ - 30
Wood - 28
Ball - 27
J. Overton - 24
C. Overton - 24

So who is in the running? Could we see an England side full of real youngsters? Do we go young and inexperienced for now, to build for the future?

Think they are slowly going to give people a chance. Don�t think we will see a whole team of them, but the likes of Cook,Anderson and broad don�t have long left. So think they might try some youngsters when there rested.

I don�t think he�ll be looking to get rid of the old guard soon and not all in one go. Anderson, Broad and Cook are oldest so likely to go first although I don�t think we�ll be seeing this in the next 2 years. The one thing I can see happening is resting Anderson and Broad over this time so perhaps will give the bowlers a chance to stake their claim and adjust to international cricket.

By the time Cook and Broad go, Bairstow, Root and Woakes (and maybe more) will be in their 30's - which is I guess what you want, 3 or 4 at both ends of the scale and the rest between 25 and 32 at the peak of their powers.

You can't place too high a premium on experience in my opinion - just think that as I continue to play into my 30s, I continue to learn more, I can only assume that is true of top players as well.

I seem to recall Atherton saying that the day that you stop leaning about the game is the day that you should retire. That experience that England have is invaluable if you want to give young players the chance to come into the side

I think with cricketers being far more all round athetes these days and the fact that they can narrow down onto a single format should mean careers could be extended... and i would always say if your good enough your old enough so age should not really be a factor when it comes to a pure selection. Obviously it never that clear cut as the �future� of the Sadie always needs to be considered and if we have learnt anything from trying to find an opening partner for cook... its that we might need to nurture it from within the England set up and not rely on the county scene.
