Pace Bowling Queries
« on: November 22, 2018, 12:00:21 PM »

Hi guys ! I started playing cricket again after a gap of almost 15 years :) Since I don't have friends around my place who play cricket, I joined an academy.  I am 31 years old (6 feet tall) and have been trying to play regularly for the last couple of weeks. I was a pace bowler during my teens and learned to play with older guys and watching cricket on TV ... No academy, no coaching involved at all.

I've been bowling regularly in the nets but I don't feel that I have a decent pace anymore. Or the reason could be that I had always bowled at this speed and was never aware of it  :( My friends and coach at the academy ask me to put a bit more effort into my bowling and say that my body and action seems too relaxed. They also mention that with my height, I should be generating more pace. I've also been trying to work on flicking the wrist when releasing the ball so that I can get more bounce and pace but it isn't working.

Am I worrying too much ? Should I even care about pace at this age ? I joined the academy so that I could play regularly and improve my game but this has been bugging me a lot lately.

Also, the first 10 days or so were fine. I had no complaints even when I bowled with a full run up with all my energy but for the past 5 days or so I have been getting shoulder pain. We warm up before every session so I don't know if that could be the case. Or is it simply because of my age ?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic :)

I will definitely post a video in a couple of days when I get an opportunity to record a clip of my bowling action.

First of all 31 isnt old so stop thinking that its your age. Secondly pace isnt everything. I batted against very young boys who did not have pace but bowled well due to line and length.

Line and length comes first in my opinion. and i am not a bowler

Videoing yourself bowling is definitely the best place to start.  There can be any number of issues with your action that result in your body generating less pace than it could otherwise do
