I'm looking into refurbishing some of my old bats but don't know what stuff would be required to do it. I know you need different types of sandpaper and a Sander but whats the best stuff to buy for a beginner. I purchased an Argos value sander and some cheap sandpaper. However when ive used the sandpaper by hand it disintegrates so i presume its garbage. If anyone could recommend some stuff to get that would be great.

This works fine. I keep a stock of 80/120 and 240 grit

You need to be careful with the coarse grades of paper as they can create some pretty big marks if used too aggressively and you'll spend ages with the finer grades trying to get them out. You can also tear bits out if you're going against the grain on a particularly soft piece of wood.

Just take your time with it and work through several grades getting finer each time. 240 is as fine as you need to go really although I've used 320 grit in the past to get a really smooth finish.

I've used 1200 grit wet and dry (Used it dry) as a test but it's too fine to make much of a difference IMHO and the dark grey nature of it tends to leave smudge marks on the bat if you're not careful.

Waste of time if you ask me - some 240/320 grit is all you need to get a great finish and I'm sure that's all the main manufacturers go up to anyway before polishing.

Reason I asked was because I used some and finishing was ultra smooth... can't remember what grade..

Just ordered some 400 to just spruce up one of my bats.

If the bat has quite a bit of wear I'll use 120 with an orbital sander then work to 180 and then 240. I then sand by hand for 320 and 400 just to put the finishing touches on it. If I'm just cleaning the face of a bat I'll typically start at 180 as no need to be taking out a lot of wood with the sander if it''s just for a cleanup

If you want the shine, beeswax is your go, but you'll have to buff pretty vigorously by hand. It's not really necessary though.

Get a decent random orbital sander. Most important piece of equipment I use.

Personally don't like using  wet and dry  on bats  as its design for metal when used wet  it can leave  the wood  with a black ingrain.
