Lower back discomfort bowling
« on: January 17, 2019, 10:24:29 AM »

When bowling recently I have had a fair bit of discomfort in my lower back. I have had massage therapy on it but that doesn't seem to have done the trick.

To be precise, it is pain about 6-8 inches up from my waist/pelvis that is aggravated by bowling and weight work in the gym. It is fairly central, slightly to the left of my spine.

Anyone had anything similar that got properly diagnosed? I'm going to check my travel insurance and hopefully see a Dr or physio about it next week.

I would suggest you get healthy and then get some bowling coaching with a biomechanic bowling coach in the Ian Pont mould.
It is impossible for people on here to really help you (especially without a video of you bowling from front on side on and behind)

It sounds like it's your spinal erectors and it's a problem I have struggled with before. It is usually taller people who have this problem and it's aggravated by tight hips, glutes and hamstrings. If they are tight they pull down on the lower back and put a lot of force on two small muscles. I would look to Kelly Starrett (I HIGHLY recommend getting his book, it will save you lots of money and time finding cures to injuries), he also has some good videos on youtube.

A good way to strengthen these muscles is doing Romanian deadlifts. I would drop any exercise that is hurting your lower back (Squat and conventional deadlifts are usually the two most common).

In my workout yesterday I was OK until I got to the RDLs, at which point I had to pack in and go due tk the discomfort. Romanian are the only kind of deadlift I do. My hammys are normally pretty tight but have been better recently.

Im going to get some footage to send to my bowling coach, who I've been working with for a whole. I'm wondering if it may be due to bowling on astro wickets, extra shock through my front leg jarring my back perhaps.
