Do cricket bats play less well beyond a certain time?

I have quite a few questions in my head at mo.
I know a cricket bat needs to be knocked in to be at its best performance best.
But in the same way does a cricket bat start to play worse beyond a certain period of use? Does it play less well after the fibres have been compressed too much, or some such? Or as long as it's oiled and looked after, is it good to keep playing well till broken?

There is a definite lifespan for a bat where the performance starts to degrade rather than improve, although most people on here don't use a bat long enough to get to that state!

I usually find the handle goes before anything else but every re-handle i've had done changes the pickup of the bat to an extent I don't want to use it - that maybe because you get so used to the feel of a bat used over a longer period of time.

Technically, I think it's got something to do with the top compressed willow layer delaminating or something like that but others more qualified than me will be able to help.

I purchased a Nick Nixon bat a month or so ago and the advice from them was to re-knock the bat in at the beginning of each season. I can't say that made much sense to me but I'm not a bat maker just an endless bat buyer. I've never re-knocked a bat in ever but then I've probably not used a bat for more than a season in about 10 years.

JTtaylor  when  a bat is  pressed and used the  blade fibres are pushed together and the bat then begins  to delaminate once delamination starts the bat as reach it peak and you get the trampoline effect off the blade followed by the fibres then starting to uncurl  and the bat slowly dies.                                                                                                                                       Hence the recommendation of knocking your bat in at the start of each season.

As has been mentioned, bats begin to delaminate with use until they get to the point where the ping has noticeably gone.  Where that point is will partly depend on how much you use the bat for practice sessions compared to games.  I got around 3000 runs out of my last match bat before parts of it were feeling died
