Thinning a Bat Handle
« on: May 21, 2019, 01:10:04 AM »

I have this really nice, pingy bat with a thick handle and I want to make the bat handle a little thinner.

What is the recommended process for thinking a bat handle?

Do you use twine again or can medical tap do the job ?

Thanks.

depends how much thinner. Easy to take binding off and put on fiber tape on in its place and then put a thinner less textured grip on, that may get what you desire. otherwise a rasp or aggressive sandpaper ~80grit.

As above both binding and medical tape work I use the smooth stuff for a better feel but the thinner the handle the more chance of  the handle breaking and  the thinner the handle the greater the flex also  with bindings there's less vibration through the handle

How about leaving the binding on the lower 3-4 inches of the handle like Kranzbuhler bats, thin the rest of the handle , and then cover the thinned handle with medical tape? Would that cut down on vibration?

Yes I tend to remove binding and thin only where the hands grip.
Also leaving the lower inches will not weaken the handle in the vee and shoulders  stress points
