Disk Injury (Back)
« on: June 13, 2019, 04:30:39 PM »

Anyone ever had a disk injury? Had a back injury picked up playing hockey, tried to play first game of season as batsman only but was in too much pain so haven't played since.

Just got results from MRI and have L5-S1 disk protrusion. Told to see surgeon who will recommend either injection or surgery. Anyone got any experience of this?

Sounds ghastly. Get well soon.

Had my second Discectomy (Taking the protruding part of the disc off) as it was affecting my legs. Surgery takes away leg pain but didn't fix my back pain. I have ongoing issues with pain in my back.
Had two injections, did nothing.
Its a tough injury to play with because a sudden movement can put it out and pretty much make you bed ridden.

Had cervical discectomy in December C5,C6,C7 discs in the neck. Not quite the same but similarish. My recovery period is the whole of 2019, first 3 months I'm not going to lie were painful and surgery was a huge jolt to the system. Loads of physio and rehab now 6 months later things are looking a whole lot better. still have some symptoms but nothing compared to pre op.

I had to have the op myself but I know there are other alternatives available depending on how severe the condition of the disc is.

Personally if you have the option of an injection I would try that but as potzy says it may not work and surgery may be your best option.

Different people recover from disc operations at wildly different rates. I'm getting on a bit to still play sport(cricket is classed as a contact sport by the surgeon), if you're young fit and weight is good etc you could recover much quicker.

Hope this helps, don't leave it too late would be my tip, I did for various reasons and nearly paid a heavy price.

God bless the NHS  :)

I missed most of last season with 2 degenerated and herniated discs in my lower back. Saw the consultant and surgeon who said they fuse both vertebrae but no guarantee it would improve anything so they left it as is and I just have to manage the pain.

Its nowhere near as painful now as it was at its prime last season but I do have constant pain. Good news is I am back playing but I am really conscious about what I do to manage it long term.

Best thing I've found that helped me is I bought a second hand teeter inversion table which I use daily to reduce the compression on my spine

Also the best thing you can do is strengthening your core. Yoga was very good for me and reduced a lot of pain. I didn't stick with it and re-injured myself. Its a hard thing to keep working on but will make a huge difference overall.
My biggest problem now is if I stand in the same position for too long, it starts to ache. I took my back for granted and you realise how much of your daily life revolves around the spine. Get it seen to mate and hopefully you'll be ok.

Having done alot of powerlifting, and been around blokes that have had disc herniations and protrusions, surgery is often recommended but not always the only way. I personally know of at least 2 people that did an absolute boatload of rehab (basically treated rehab like a 2nd job) and they managed to recover from the disc herniation with no invasive procedures needed.

On the flip side my mum has had 2 neck fusions and 3 back fusions and is still left in constant paid due to facet joint issues and due to sciatica.

It goes either way, and while that's a (No Swearing Please) situation, unfortunately it's the truth.

What can I reccomend?
1) get yourself a good physio that has testimonials about this kind of stuff. Together plan a pre/rehab program to either take the place of surgery, or to help after it.
2)lots of stretching and releasing of the musculature in and around your back - such as your piriformis, your QL, your psoas your erectors, your lats and even your serratus (can all be found online) stretch 2ce a day, you will notice a difference.
3) a tilt table, as already mentioned. Very very good products that are a god send for reducing compression.
4) ice. Fairly self explanatory, it reduces inflammation and is therefore good for 99% of injuries.
5) stay as active as you can without being in alot of pain. One of my friends could not walk with his disc herniations. So he initially did as much stretching as he could manage without pain and then he could walk a little without pain, and he gradually increased his walking distance. Until eventually he could walk pain free. Laying down and doing nothing is the absolute worst thing you can do for a back injury.
6)take up yoga or any form of exercise that is non concussive and builds core strength. Strong core = strong back

I’ve got exactly the same as you. Sold off my kit as thought I’d have to retire, as cricket ( especially so due to short bursts of exertion) exacerbated the problem.
What worked for me:
Pilates
Weight loss
Steroid injections
Physio ( who specialises in core strength/back issues)
Medication( a course of amitriptyline helps massively)

Was offered an operation, but my consultant recommended to delay for as long as possible

I’ve had this for over 20yrs, I’ve missed a lot of cricket with it
I said no to surgery and no to the injections, I just manage the pain etc,
I remember my doc at the time saying there’s a lot of money to be made in backs.

My ex is just going for surgery after two years of serious pain,(she’s done the bottom two discs)
She had the injection a month ago, and said the waiting room was full of people who’d already had it !

Some things work for some, and others it doesn’t

I talked to loads who’d gone through it, and the one thing that kept coming back was a decent chiropractor

Had a ruptured disc when I was 19/20 and it was horrible, worst pain I've ever been in. Doctor did suggest surgery but when I heard him say there was a slight chance of incontinence if it didn't go totally right I very quickly said "No thanks".

I was basically out of action for a few years until I started doing very basic strength training. Squats, deadlifts, that sort of thing. Started with an empty barbell and slowly but consistently added weight and as I got stronger my back started to feel better and better to the point where I was able to start playing American football again.
