How do ‘you’ practice slip catching?
« on: July 19, 2019, 06:24:10 PM »

With shoulders completely (No Swearing Please) and no arm left, I’m trying to turn myself into a slipper cum gully, and as such trying to get some teammates to do some specific practice.

However, I don’t feel the ‘standing in a loose semi-circle whilst a ball is whacked at you from 10ft away’ is really the right thing.

For starters it doesn’t replicate standing behind a batter watching the edge, and is no good for gully angles at all.

Does anyone do any more sophisticated slip drills or use any funky equipment?

How quick are the bowlers and how fast is the pitch?

I used to stand in first slip and it was fun but I now let young'uns break their fingers :D

If you have no choice, just have someone do under arm throws from a 15 feet at an incresing fast pace and your hands/eyes will adjust. It's not that bad as long as you stand at the correct distance for the bowler and know the correct angles.

Same here Brucie, I don’t go near slips now after two fingers broken,,,backward point, and if it’s a foot either side, one of the youngsters can chase it

A bola at ground level hitting a catch-it ramp is probably the most realistic drill you can do at Club level.  If that is too quick, a guy throwing it at the ramp works.

I still enjoy the old fashioned catching cradle but they can be lethal at times

+1 for the catch cradle - many a fun hour to be had using those.

Catch it ramp and someone who knows how to use it properly throwing is the way to go, for me it's the most natural way to replicate slips catches, I also angle three of those spiked spring stumps towards the catcher so the ball flicks them occasionally and creates a nick and a small movement to make sure you're watching and moving well.

Go to the beach and practice catching in the sea with a wind ball and a willing thrower

My only bit of advice I can give to anyone considering standing in the slips is to get yourself to 1st slip because in my experience, the catches are so much easier to take.

I appreciate it's not always the case but I have found that edges to 1st slip come from defensive shots or shots with a straighter bat. Also you can pick up the line of the ball from the bowler so much easier at 1st slip so you often know the the ball is heading in your direction before the batsman has even edged it. In contrast, whenever I have been stood further around at 3rd or 4th slip, the ball only seems to head in my direction when the batsman has flashed hard outside off and it arrives at pace + often dipping so these chances are so much more difficult to catch.

One other thing I would do is talk the wicketkeeper before the innings starts and discuss what the pair of you will do when the ball goes straight up. Couple of seasons I had this exact scenario when a spinner was bowling, the ball went straight up so I simply backed away to let the wicketkeeper takeover but he just stood there, it landed less than 3 yards from him and he then had the audacity to blame me for not catching it. In fairness that might speak volumes of the level of cricket I now play.

See I would argue 1st is a lot harder. Got to deal with keepers either coming or not across you. If you are the last man in the cordon no one can dive across you.
I’m happiest at 2nd, no keeper coming across in front. And where I’ve done it most.

Katchet ramps or some one throwing at someone to knick em really are the best ways
