Preparing for a higher level?
« on: August 19, 2019, 01:28:45 PM »

Hello everyone!

Yesterday I faced up to an opening bowler who is considered a decent bowler 5 leagues above me. Most of the opening bowlers I face at my standard are those blokes who bowl about 30mph and are a nightmare to face on the wet green tracks we play on as one usually slides under the bat or I play so early I get caught

This lad comfortably bowled twice as quick, and I actually found him easier to face as I didn’t have to generate pace myself.

It got me thinking. In the last year my two biggest scores (105 & 70) have come against a team who have three quick seamers who dropped down 3/4 leagues to play together.

Next year there’s possibly the chance of me to go and play 4 leagues above myself as my Sunday side need Saturday players. Obviously this would mean facing quicker bowling, better spinners and the odd overseas.

If this does happen, its got me wondering how I would spend the winter improving. I’d be interested to hear from anyone who’s  made a similar step up previously

Also: whilst I’m at uni I’m probably going to try and get some coaching as I’ve never had any due to only starting playing in my late teens.

So if anyone has any suggestions for a coach in and around the Huddersfield area over this winter, I’d be grateful as well!

You've answered your own question to an extent - get a coach, with access to a bowling machine so you can work on upping the pace. It's all about what you get used to playing. Pro's would struggle facing 30mph dobbers on rubbish wickets.

If you can find a side to practice with over the winter whilst you are at uni that are a good standard, see if you can join in, even if you can't play for them in the summer.

I'm currently having this same issue, it's not really the pace you will find is the harder aspect. It's the old codger whos bowling 60mph hooping it both ways with the odd cutter at the top level. The guys who pickup 35 wickets a season with ease and go at 2 an over. The quicker guys are generally a bit more eratic and still give you that 4 ball.

I'd say find a coach and a SideArm buddy.

First session in a week with coach and then whatever you learn, you can implement with SideArm buddy.

After today’s events I’ve decided whatever happens I’ll be trying to play at a higher level next season. Players aren’t making themselves available hence why we have 6/7 non cricketers playing.

As much as I can’t fault them for turning up for us, being relied on to score big runs, bowl when my body is in no fit state to do so, as well as have to umpire, score and generally babysit people has taken its toll to the point that had it happened earlier in the season I would have left already because I’m not enjoying cricket. Our skipper knows I’m off so that’s effectively my decision made

With that being said I’m looking towards next season already

My uni is close to the cricket asylum in Sowerby bridge, so I was wondering if any of you had experienced any of the 1 to 1 coaching there and if you would recommend it

I’d mostly be focusing on batting but potentially keeping too as I’d like to make myself useful and I’ve done a good job with the gloves in previous years

Cheers!
