Garrard & Flack Sub bat
« on: April 24, 2020, 08:11:47 PM »

This was a purchase on Ebay of a Sub bat direct from Garrard & Flack.

I spotted the listing early doors so had the choice of all of them, 7 to choose from. They were £85 delivered.

Number 6 also caught my eye, it was more grainy albeit less straight and too light for me if I were to use it, the Sub aspect oddly wasn't specified so was a bit unsure because of this. Equally, it may have been the pin knots visible on the rear and someone has picked up a corker.

This one number 4 seemed to be better cosmetically (although both 4 and 6 listed as G2), it was Sub because of a rear pressing crack but at least I knew why and it was photographed clearly enough so no surprises.

So pulled the trigger and very pleased with what arrived, nicely finished, decent quality grip possibly the same grip supplier as for Salix. Mid middle, 2lb 10oz as listed and very decent edges at 38mm or so. 7 grains not quite evenly spaced, no heartwood, blemish-free face and just shy of a G1 I would say.

Some initial photos here, will look better with an application of oil and will post some more once that has taken effect.

Looks a stunning bat. Any idea why it was a sub? Clean grains straight though the toe and looks like a decent size

I was tempted by that one, so glad it's gone to a good home and someone on here, looks a bargain

Have undertaken a few minutes of knocking in and bounced both new and old cricket balls on the face.

Firstly and most importantly, there is nothing different sounding in the area on the face corresponding to where the rear surface crack (which is why this bat is a Sub) is, so that is good news.

Otherwise, probably a little harder than other bats where the mallet indents and seam marks would appear more readily, nevertheless, was pinging nicely and will improve once fully prepared. So far, so good.
