In terms of pure talent, the only batsman I've seen across formats for England who measures up to Root was Pietersen. Stokes is certainly pushing for it in recent years but Root's record across Test and ODI cricket is absurdly good. Cook's success was more a product of brilliant mentality and grit than sheer natural talent.
