Bancroft tells us the least surprising news ever - that the bowlers knew what was going on. It will be interesting to see if/what CA do about it. It would be good for England if Starc, Hazelwood & Cummins got banned ahead of the Ashes�

Quite possibly the only time I can remember the whole forum actually agreeing on anything

. At the time we all said the same thing.

Just impossible to believe 3 of them and no bowlers did not know, and therefore were complicit, in sandpaper gate.

I said at the time, it's not the fact sandpaper was used, there's been bottle tops,Murray mints,Vaseline and all sorts before,it's the cover up and lies the Aussies expected the press,public and fans to believe.

I don't think Bancroft has played since, the rookie seen as disposable by Smith and Warner, he's might as well tell it as it was.

The deceit and trying to lie their way out is proving far worse than altering the state of the ball ever was, it's not as if that has never been done before.

CA have apparently said they're open to new information, whether it's from Bancroft or anyone else. Interesting that he's decided to throw them under the bus, could have just dodged the question and moved on from there...

I'm still staggered the 'leadership group' was two senior batsmen and the new guy eager to please, of the bowlers you'd surely expect Starc, Lyon and Hazlewood to be involved. Either they're all good at lying, or Iain Roy's investigation at the time wasn't very thorough.

FYI: Geoff Lemon's book on this (Steve Smith's Men) is a brilliant read...

If they decide to bury any of the bowlers my money would be on Starc and Lyon tbh. Both already on the wane and got collared by the Indians. Blame them and CA will act like it�s case closed.

I don't believe CA want or would do anything about any new information, Smith and Warner are 2 of their best players they have returned, even with Smith being touted to return as Captain.

Bancroft was the rookie thrown under the bus, he was disposable and it's hard to believe he was anywhere close to being part of the 'leadership group'.

If you look at ball tampering previously, it's been used to assist seam bowlers, to reserve swing. I can't recall or see any advantage for spinners.

I dont think Stuart Broad fingered anyone specific when he brought this up before the actual incident in South Africa but I always thought he was referring to the reverse swing Starc got.

Why did Bancroft choose to speak out now?

What good does he expect to come out of these revelations?

Cricket fans want to see cricket and world class cricketers in action (t-20 doesn't count, it is boring) displaying their best skills. Over a year under pandemic lockdown would do that to people. In large scheme of things, after millions dead and some light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, except for a few nit pickers, nobody would give a rat's a$$ about ball tampering.

He played the 2019 Ashes over here. The point is still spot on like, he was easily disposable then and is very unlikely going to be back in the side. I thought he might�ve answered it a bit more cannily though as he was picked for that Ashes series on the back of his performances for Durham. It was his return to Durham this week that brought on the interview.

I guess in Bancroft's position where he was hung out to dry and Cummins, Stars and Hazlewood have suffered no consequences at all, he has no reason to continue to cover for them. At the time of the original investigation, there was the prospect of a return to international cricket if he kept his mouth shut, but now it would seem that door is closed and there is no reason to continue to cover up what went on.

Absolutely. And why should he take the rap as a rookie in the team.

David Saker is quoted in today's Guardian on the subject with a differing view to Cricket Australia. They wanted to get rid of it quickly as a PR excercise without seriously weakening the core of the team.
