Wes Durston used to wear his Strettons under his compression shorts, for the same effect
I do the same. Have a couple of pairs of shock doctor shorts for the job.

Do you use the straps still mate or just pop them in without?

Maybe I actually saw Lyth doing something similar?

So here is a very specific request - I think I have come full circle,

I have tried the Aero P2 and also some other 'inny - outy' thigh pad sets, and basically I find them cumbersome and obstructive. I'm not sure if it is my mahoosive plums, or my COVID-girth, but I cannot get comfy with them.

I play at a poo level with very gentle bowling, and I am thinking of going back to the old, skin-tight shorts with the outer pad in the outer pocket.

Does anyone have any recommendations for these - I used to use the Kookaburra shorts and they seemed to work quite well.

I am basically the 'Anti-Buzz'

Late to this. First of all, thanks for the mental image of the plums. Secondly, I sometimes use a white pair of Nike basketball compression baselayer shorts like these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392818135551?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338364432&customid=392818135551_11450&toolid=11000 The upside of using them is that they are designed for movement and stay in place so no need for constant fiddling. On a warm afternoon they are comfortable. I've worn them for fielding in the slips on hard ground as the side padding protects the hips for my oh-so-athletic dives.I could probably bowl in them as well if I had to.
The downside is the padding isn't quite in the right spot compared to a normal thigh pad (you'll be able to see from the picture) and I still have to wear something to keep the box in place. The ones I have do contain a pouch for the box but it's too narrow for most cricket boxes and, ahem, my towering masculinity doesn't agree with the narrower boxes.
If you can find a cheap pair then they are worth a go. Im probably a bit like you in terms of standard played. If I play for the 1st XI then I'd use my Ton conventional thighpad with GM boxer briefs but when I'm dropped to the 2nds I'm happy there is enough protection with the Nike shorts.

I use these with Aeros outside, but I think a Stretton outer or similar would work just put inside with no strap, as they are compression fit. Never tried it tho.

To save starting a new thread. Does anybody wear the padman shorts but use better protection thigh pads in there instead of using the basic foam they provide?

I’m thinking about doing this to save any issues with straps

To follow this up…

Throughout the season I really struggled with thigh pads. Never had this before but I think once it was in my head it became more obvious.

I tried just a single thigh pad, p2s, some games nothing and then I found a solution with padman shorts but adding a different thigh pad…. (Bit more protection)

Conclusion, shorts with a better thigh pad in is epic, so comfy! I didn’t wear an inner and wore my box in the jock strap.

Now to purchase an older Stretton and use that for even more protection without compromising on comfort.

Redders, what was the better thigh pad you used?

Just a standard thigh pad mate, but I find these have more protection than the things provided.

I have since got myself an older style set of strettons, they fit perfectly and comfort is amazing!

Now to know what to do with the numerous thigh pads I've got at home including a brand new Remfry  :( :o
