completely lost my throwing arm
« on: May 10, 2021, 08:19:19 AM »

disaster struck on saturday, in the middle of getting pummeled around the ground by the oppo i decided to take on boundary duties after everyone else had tried and failed (and dropped, and rolled over every ball that went their way)

Was doing ok, until it came to getting the ball back to the square. the arm that was fading but still floaty enough to get back on one bounce, barely made in back rolling along the ground and my arm felt like it had been stabbed.

Tried a few more times thinking it might just be rusty but no improvement other than a 30 yard side/under arm whip.

Any recommendations for improving my arm? i love fielding and would love to be able to contribute properly

Was it your arm or your shoulder? I had a similar problem with my shoulder and had a lot of success with foam rolling both the front and back of my shoulder a couple of times per week. Seems to have loosened things up and found I'm not as restricted when throwing.

If it's a consistent problem definitely get to a physio ASAP.

wouldnt say it was my arm or my shoulder, but went felt like a lead weight immediately afterwards. have booked in to see a physio this week but i cant see them being able to do much other than loosen it out.

couple of seasons ago i had a strong, flat throw from the boundary, thats clearly gone but would be nice to get the ball back to the stumps.

Going to do some fielding practice at nets tomorrow, hopefully some exercise will improve things

I've found this can be an issue if you go into the field cold ie don't warm up the throwing arm. Start with some small stuff building up to boundary throws.

If I go into the field without warming up that first throw with real effort makes my arm feel as you describe.

Yeah spend 4-5 minutes to stretch shoulders, biceps, triceps properly. Make use of gymastic bands or some other elastic helps. That really gets the arm going and you can stretch after the match.

feels as if all the strength has gone out of it, i have been captain for the last few years so havent had to get too close to the boundary so havent tested it out but was pretty embarrassing to give it everything on Saturday and watch it worm burn its way there

I had pain when throwing about 5 years ago - physio thought it was rotator cuff related. 18 months of physio and trying acupuncture etc, finally the GP arranged a scan. Turned out was nothing to do with the rotator cuff, I had a labrum tear - one steroid injection and it was sorted, never had it since!

Hope you’ve not done ur rotator cuff like I did...by the time I had the op only one tendon was holding it on but my throw has been gone ever since.
