Oxfordshire Cricket Bat - Butterfly
« on: April 24, 2022, 08:52:54 PM »

Hi all,

First time poster and semi-regular reader of the site.

I'm not 100% sure the new bat fits into custom made but it's as good a place as any.

When it was time to get a new bat I thought this site was the best place to look. So many great choices available. Unfortunately, not enough funds to buy a bat from everyone!

Anyway, I contacted Mark about what I was looking for and he got back to me quickly saying he had a nice butterfly on the go.  Having done some research on these I thought I would go for it.  Mark's challenge was to get it down to around 2lb 9oz with a mid-blade sweet spot.

He managed it perfectly. 2lb 9oz on the dot, fully labelled and gripped.

The bat picks up lovely and the mallet pings off the middle of the bat.  Starting to hit balls with it this week at nets. Took it down to nets last week and the bat had many admirers - too much admiring by one or two odd folk.  Can't wait to use for this season and beyond.

Mark was great to deal with. Would highly recommend.  Having trouble uploading photos due to file size issues. If I get fixed I will upload.

I'll try to become a regular poster on the site. To be fair, bats aren't my area of interest when it comes to cricket, as much as I love looking at them all.  Grounds-keeping for me, having volunteered for the role for several seasons at an old club.  Who thought cutting lawn would be such fun?!

A big thanks to Mark. Cheers.

Great 1st post and look forward to seeing pics.

Mark makes a great bat, and is really easy to work with on agreeing specs and shape, he gets some lovely willow in all grades.

Many thanks for the kind words Mark and Ali

I’ve gone from really not likening butterfly willow, to actually preferring it in some respects,(maybe Boycott was onto something after all)
It’s not the easiest to work with, and can be slightly heavier/denser for a given size,,,but for me anyway, I love the finish that I can get on the willow, and of course they seem to ping very nice straight away, and tend to be a little more resilient.

Again, thankyou for the kind words,,,it does mean a lot👍

2 lb 9 and fills the gauge like that with minimal concaving?!  Love it!.  Great looking bat, I'm sure you'll score plenty with it :)

Welcome to the forum - nice to have a some more mower jockeys around.

Mark and Oxfordshire bats seem to be getting better, I do think you should listen to a bat maker on weights but if you want 2lb 9oz that’s really what you should get.

This looks a good bat with a very useable weight

Thanks for posting the photos, Mark. I tried three laptops and just couldn’t get them to resize!

Thanks also for the welcome and the comments.

We discussed the weight and both thought it would come in higher than it finally did. I was looking for something a bit lighter than my current 2ld 12 oz bat. This has turned out perfectly.

Now there really isn’t anything else to blame but myself for any low scores!

Mark does an absolutely cracking butterfly bat, the one he made up for me is a monster. Can't wait to break it out for a first league game, hopefully this weekend.
