Hi all,

I think I'm on the right lines here- but since I have 0 experience it's better to check first!

I've bought my son one of those narrow bats for training/nets. It's a size 6, the same as his normal bat, but I assume it will be lighter. I intend to weigh both bats to add self adhesive weights to the back of the training bat to make them equal. I also plan to find the bat's centre of gravity, and add the weights at a height to match the C of G of his bat.

By my reckoning that should (as close as is reasonably sensible) give him a training bat that plays identically to his real bat.

Is this what everyone else does with these bats?

You'll find most batmakers recommended making training bats to replicate a match bat in weight and profile i think. Obviously if you're buying a cheaper one ots, then i suppose you can add weight to it like this to make it as close to the match bat as possible. Seems a bit of a faf though and you'd need to ensure the additional weight is fixed securely. If you're going to that extent, you'd maybe need to replicate the handle too.

Cheers- didn't want to spend a lot on a bat he might not even use very often- and will grow out of even if he does!

The profile seems tricky as obviously the edges become irrelevant since they are technically missing- I can't see an easy way to replicate the middle position beyond getting another match bat.

I've seen some self adhesive lead (I think) strips and figure if the self adhesion isn't strong enough then duct tape will be! So it should be a 5 minute job.

Hi - I just found this topic. My son is involved in County Age group and is currently spending around 6-7 hours a week batting. His 2 Keeley Harrow match bats from last year are now nearing end of life as serious cracks are coming about plus he has grown. We have been and bought him senior bats but I'm nervous that the season is still 3 months to the season - we may have some more bat casualties if he starts using the new ones.

What would people suggest - if I should buy a bat that he can use at training and what grade if bat would be recommended? We have just spent a small fortune on the 2 senior bats -

I would say, a bat around the same weight and profile and handle thickness, to the match bats. Grade 3 bats will be fine.

Speak to Chase mad buy one of their r1 butterfly bats for �100 or less as a net bat in the same weight as your son's bat.

Thanks I'll reach out to them - didnt realise how expensive they get once you move from Kids sizes
