Not a full review, but I know it can be hard to find out about some of the small businesses working locally, so I just thought I'd share my experiences if anyone needs some work doing in the local area. Might help someone out.
As I posted elsewhere- Oliver wanted a thicker handle on his bat, and a rehandle seemed excessive. Following the advice on the forum, I decided that adding some extra binding underneath the grip seemed like the best way to go. I got some very kind offers of a free rebind from a couple of forum members, but wanted to get it done locally for a couple of reasons. I cross referenced with the post about bat makers in Manchester, and contacted 2 businesses:
https://www.phoenixbatservice.co.uk/ in Bury and Grant cricket in Nelson. For whatever reason I got no reply from Grant, but a fast response from Phoenix and a price of a tenner seemed perfect.
It's a bloke in a very dusty (but well appointed) garage- which I love. We showed him the bat, and the one with the thicker handle, and he advised a second layer of binding would be enough. 20 minutes and everything was bound, glued and taped. A free scuff sheet was applied and he said it was £5. I pointed out he had said it would be £10, but it hadn't taken him as long as expected. Oliver was delighted, and said it felt perfect in his hands.
I obviously can't comment on the technical repairs that would need a degree of skill, but during our chat he told me that a set of bats nearby were destined for one of the large cricket establishments nearby (I won't say where, just in case). He had been refurbing/repairing them- I get the impression they subcontract the work out to him. So all in all, I got an excellent service and would be confident to use him if I need something more substantial in the future. I hope this helps if someone needs some work on their bat in the area.
