2022 IPL marathon...
« on: February 12, 2022, 07:25:15 AM »

Seems it is auction day for this year's new and expanded IPL.
The old version seemed to last forever. This year's will make even the big bash look short and punchy.

Seems the teams are finally getting wiser on how the acquire players.
All players signed in this auction are receiving 3 years deals.
David Warner and Quinton de Kock picked up as ‘bargains’ at $850,000 per season. Obviously that’s less than what they previously had, i think Warner was around $1.5m at Sunrisers before they sacked him.
But after 3 years it’s still a guaranteed $2.5m! Not to be sniffed at!

Older players seem to also be receiving lower bids, also logical as you don’t want to be paying a late 30 year old over the top at the end of the 3 year cycle.

Shakib Al Hasan unsold bizarre.
Steven Smith unsold not a surprise
David Miller unsold he’s a good slogger to surprising.

Sounds like he's alright thankfully, always makes you worry when something like that happens.

Yep definitely.

Looks like their using a replacement auctioneer for the rest of the day, which is probably wise.

Some of the big earners:

Harshal Patel leading wicket taker in IPL 2021 - $1.33m. Good to see someone unheralded earn a big pay cheque.

KG Rabada $1.27m

Shreyas Iyer $1.62m - will become KKR captain

Jonny Bairstow $895k

Dinesh Karthik $729k

Ishan Kishan $2.02m - probably ends up as a franchise player for Mumbai once Rohit Sharma retires.

Mitch Marsh $862k reward for an outstanding T20 WC

Ambati Rayudu $895k - odd to commit nearly $2.7m on a 36 year old part time cricketer.

Washington Sundar $1.16m

Nicholas Pooran $1.42m - insane money…must help having Indian heritage!

Wanindu Hasaranga $1.42m - future superstar imo

David Warner $829k - big pay cut for the NSW slugger

Jason Holder $1.16m - good reward for a genuinely incredible person and fine player

South Africa’s u19 sensational Dewald Brevis picked up by Mumbai for $400k. He could be their 2022 Marco Jansen.

He bowls serious pace that is for sure but can also travel the distance. Pace is important (of course) but if you can't move the ball off the straight people will eventually use your pace against you. Look at Tymal Mills, very quick but his best ball is arguably his slower ball out the back of his hand.
