Gray Nicolls Alpha Gen 1.0 3 Star
« on: December 16, 2022, 01:48:59 PM »

Happy Friday!

After a manic week, I thought I would spend 30 minutes away from the work laptop to get some photos and do a little review of another bat I picked up this week.

Having picked up all the Gunn & Moore bats that I wanted for the collection, I found myself trawling through some retailer websites earlier in the week and as I often do, I came back to Cricket-Hockey who are located about 30 minutes up the road from me in Downton. They have a "Christmas Sale" on which included some of their 2022 Gray Nicolls bats.

When purchasing from Cricket-Hockey, providing you are signed up, you earn loyalty rewards on any purchase, and having picked up a GM bat and some soft goods from them earlier in the year, the Christmas Sales combined with some additional discount gave me no option but to make an impulsive and arguably unnecessary purchase.

Strangely, Gray Nicolls is not a brand I see too much of at my club / the leagues I played in last year so I was intrigued when I stumbled across a Alpha Gen 1.0 3 Star for just over £100. Having raved about the GM Signature bats, I thought I would treat myself a mid-range GN bat to see how it stacked up, and this is what arrived.

Weight: 2lb 10.0oz
555mm blade
Shoulders: 12mm
Edges: 35mm
Toe: 24mm

Initial thoughts....

For the price I paid, which including postage was under £100, its an absolute steal.

The bat comes with a semi oval handle and a decent grip. It seems to be that happy medium when it comes to handle thickness - its not Keeley thin, but its not GM Hypa thick.

Profile wise, it has a "mid to high" middle position and this particular Alpha Gen comes with no concaving whatsoever.

Tapping up with an old ball, which was admittedly done in the garden when it was -3, the bat felt a little harder than some but the rebound was decent so I am hoping it will open up after some net sessions. Either that, or I didn't middle one of the practice hits which is an equally plausible answer.

The stickers look a lot better in real life than they do on the stock photos. The back of the bat looks very imposing, especially when holding it in your batting stance. I am a big fan of the inclusive bat cover too!

Anyway, some willow pictures for a Friday.

I just need to work out how to get the residue from the pricing stickers off the bat now and then try and resist ordering a 4 star Alpha Gen that Cricket-Hockey also have in their sale...!

Enjoy!

If it won't just peel off after heating up a little with a hair dryer, then a touch of white spirit will loosen the residue off. You can also but sticky stuff remover, which does the job.
