Question For Bat Makers...
« on: March 02, 2023, 05:34:03 PM »

How long can you keep a bat without being used? Do bats require regular oil check/maintenance? What kind of maintenance should be performed on a bat that has sat in a cupboard for a few years and hasn't seen the light of day?

I'm not a batmaker - but had advice from batmakers...

Things that matter for storage:

  • Storage conditions - dry and not too warm are your friend, aim is to prevent moisture from escaping or entering the bat. Away from sunlight as well.
  • Insects - make sure the storage area doesn't have woodworm or any sign of that stuff
  • Sealed - Having a scuff sheet helps seal the moisture on the face, and oil any exposed timber. Also some plastic wrap with an elastic band to tie it up at the handle will help. (Ensure oil has sufficiently soaked in and excess has been wiped before this) Things like a bat cover will probably help prevent dents if you move things around too.
  • Check - Maybe check once every year or something? Take them out for a bit of a swing. If the surface feels a bit dry, get a bit of oil on a rag and lightly give it a coat, and after a while, store it

Before reusing:

  • Recommendation from Laver IIRC - bats decompress a little over time back to their natural state, give it a bit of a knock before using again just to check.
  • Oil if it feels dry - this won't add moisture, but help retain the moisture left in the bat - hopefully giving it the best chance to live a decent remaining lifespan striking leather
  • If it hasn't been refurbished prior to being stored and has some cracks, glue these up and give a fine sand prior to the oiling.
  • Scuff if unscuffed. (Don't need to oil the face if you want to scuff)
