Calf issues
« on: April 26, 2023, 08:15:32 AM »

As per the title, really, and looking for some advice from anyone who's had similar issues

Been having issues with my right calf when bowling (left armer, not very quick at all) since around the middle of March towards the end of winter nets; it's a fairly sharp pain, typically around my soleus muscle, with no swelling or bruising or anything like that. Nothing's changed with my run-up either, joggers pace, certainly not explosive.

Stopped bowling the first time it happened, went home and did RICE as well as a bit of heat around the area for around 2 weeks at first (no cricket) before then going for a short run (I do your typical muscle stretches before as well) and feeling reasonably OK with no noticeable pain, so went to nets a few days later. Loosened up etc, bowled around 5/6 deliveries before my calf went again, and stopped.

Since then I started with RICE, then slowly after a week started to introduce some other activities such as single leg heel raises, hopping on the leg as well as jumping, then another short run, all feeling OK with nothing by way of pain. Nets last night; usual loosen up etc, this time able to get through about 12 odd deliveries before my calf caves in again. Eurgh.

Just wondering if anyone has had any similar issues and a way of rehabbing back without the issue coming back? I'm obviously doing something wrong; first thought is I'm simply just not being patient enough and need to drag this out to 4-6 weeks. I can walk OK, so not sure it's entering the world of incredbly severe Grade 2/3 in terms of a strain

Many thanks

Go and see a physio, also check your Achilles.
Heel raisers may also help.

Something like these: Plantar Fasciitis Achilles... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B083GZNYWS?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Not sure if it's the same but I've got flat feet and even though I have insoles I was having calf issues. I went to a physio who bent and stretched me and said continue. I told him it wasn't getting any better and when I started limping I when to a different physio. He didn't even lay a hand on me. He gave me a scan and sent me to hospital to confirm his suspicion that I had a (slight) tear in my calf. That was confirmed and they sent me to a specialist. They were surprised and concerned how little weight I could put on it. The cure wasn't rest but selective exercise to build it back up again. Mainly getting off and on steps and standing on my toes building that up with weights.

Go to the best specialist you can find.

Cheers both; for what its worth the achilles/ankle/heel have felt OK

Trying to get an appointment with my GP now and with any luck just refers me to physio; not holding my breath for anything immediate to be honest!

I did the same muscle many years back playing footy - doctor told me it was a solical muscle (spelling? but thats what I thought he said - symptoms sound the same as yours).  It was the last game of the year, and the month or so between footy and cricket was enough to fix it, but I was 17 at the time.  I just remember doing a lot of limping around and no physio, as the body was pretty good at fixing itself at the time.

Last season I was getting calf issues for the first time when bowling.  I went to see a sports physio for the first time in my life.  I am 42 and nearly 18 stone now but have bowled since the age of about 8 with no issues.  TBH I thought that I was maybe ready for the knackers yard but the physio worked wonders!

She said the calves are linked to the Achilles and asked if I’d had any issues in the past with these, which I had the season before.  She started feeling a few different points around my body and telling me how everything is linked.  It was really interesting.  She then gave me a deep massage of my legs, feet and calves especially and said that’s £40 please.  I said do I come back the same time next week and she said you won’t need to.  I bowled the rest of the season without issue. 👍

Like others have mentioned, she said rest isn’t the answer, keep it moving and active.  Steps/stairs are good.

Hope you get it sorted and touch wood mine hold up this season!🤞

Based off the last few days since it's reoccurred it's still painful when going up stairs. Walking generally OK around with the dog for an hour in the morning and afternoon

Funnily enough, I do have a voucher for a massage place that has a specialist in sports stuff; might consider using that once it's calmed down a tad.
